Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai smiled at the students once they'd all entered and taken their seats.

"Morning everyone! Today we're going to learn about dating. It's an important part of the modern high school experience for a lot of students and with Homecoming coming up in a few weeks, I want to give you all the information you'll need to have a wonderful time."

She launched into a short lecture on old-fashioned courtship rituals and how they evolved into modern dating. She also gave out a packet of handouts on Homecoming, Prom, Dating, and Safe Sex.

"Now, I'm going to pair you up and I want you to try asking each other out on dates. In this day and age, it's perfectly acceptable for a girl to ask someone out, so I want both of you to take a turn doing the asking. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to answer any questions you might have."

Gwynn didn't look any more relaxed about this than Zuko did.

Zuko frowned at the girl. "I don't have time to date," he informed her.

Gwynn frowned back. "Whether duty allows us to or not, I suppose we should know the correct customs of this time."

Gwynn decided that it would be impolite to point out that she was interested in someone else, anyway.

She looked down at the packet they had been given, trying to make sense of it.

Zuko ignored the packet. "I suppose. Are you going to this dance thing?"

"Is someone asking?" It wasn't so much interest as him hoping he wouldn't have to practice.

"No one has asked yet, but there is someone that I would like to." She smiled. "Do you plan to attend this dance?"

"You are not much for celebrating, are you?"

"Few people seem to think they do... but this is a school gathering. Does that make a difference?"

"No." Zuko was really good at saying that.

"Is there a reason that is your favourite word?"

For a second, there a glint of amusement in his eyes, but it might have just been the light reflecting. "No."

Gwynn bit her lip as she tried not to laugh.

"Now you are just being contrary," she said, shaking her head.

"I suppose I could ask you if you want to practice," he changes the subject.

"Apparently, practicing is the assignment, so no matter our preferences, I suppose we should."

Zuko could make a remark about that, but he was aware that Lorelai had been kind to him so he kept it to himself.

"Want to go to the dance?" There, that was quick and easy. And wow, was he enthusiastic about it, except not really.

If Gwynn knew what a *headdesk* was and how to do it, she might very well have done so. Instead, being Gwynn, she responded quite honestly.

"With you?"

Zuko froze, suddenly worried. "We're practicing," he pointed out. No way was he going to a dance.

Gwynn sighed. "I am very aware of that, sir," she said with a nod. "However, where I come from, we are to make sure of what the other person is saying before we answer yes or no."

Knowing what was being said had kept her from putting an arrow in the wrong person more than once.
