Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai smiled at the students once they'd all entered and taken their seats.

"Morning everyone! Today we're going to learn about dating. It's an important part of the modern high school experience for a lot of students and with Homecoming coming up in a few weeks, I want to give you all the information you'll need to have a wonderful time."

She launched into a short lecture on old-fashioned courtship rituals and how they evolved into modern dating. She also gave out a packet of handouts on Homecoming, Prom, Dating, and Safe Sex.

"Now, I'm going to pair you up and I want you to try asking each other out on dates. In this day and age, it's perfectly acceptable for a girl to ask someone out, so I want both of you to take a turn doing the asking. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to answer any questions you might have."

Gwynn sighed. "I am very aware of that, sir," she said with a nod. "However, where I come from, we are to make sure of what the other person is saying before we answer yes or no."

Knowing what was being said had kept her from putting an arrow in the wrong person more than once.

"I'm not going to ask a girl out for anyone else," Zuko replied.

Oh, he was such a romantic...

"Then yes, I will go to the dance with you."

Zuko nodded. "Are we done now?"

Gwynn looked over her notes. "Apparently not. I am supposed to ask you and we are to practice."

Zuko sighed. "Whenever you're ready."

Gwynn sighed with him.

"You really hate this."

"I don't see the point," Zuko said honestly.

Honesty, she liked honesty.

"Niether do I," she said with a nod. "You have no plans to go to a dance with me and I have no plans to go to a dance with you. Why should we practice something that we have no plans on doing?"

Zuko nodded in agreement, glad that Gwynn understood. "You should have said no," he pointed out.

She nodded. "Yes, I should have."

"If you ask, I'll be saying no. So there's no point in asking," he predicted.

Gwynn nodded. "Then, if we are not going to practice this activity, we should at least appear as if we are talking about something."

Zuko blinked. And sighed. "Ask me out."

Well, damn it. She had liked her idea better.

"Would you go to the dance with me?"

"No." At least he was good at this. It also meant he was done very quickly.

Gwynn's lips twitched and her eyes were filled with mirth.

"May I make a suggestion?"

He raised an eyebrow. "I suppose."

"Whether you wish to go out with a lady when she asks you or not, sometimes it is a good idea to try to spare her feelings." Amazing that she could say this with a straight face. "A plain no as that might hurt the lady's feelings and cause her to be bereft and moody for a long time."

It was obvious from Gwynn's facial expressions that she found such ladies annoying.

Zuko frowned. "I don't think this will be a problem either way."

"Have you seen some of the ladies here?"

"Yes," he shrugged, clearly not seeing what that had to do with it.

"Some of them do not take terse rejection well."

"Then they shouldn't ask me out," he replied because it really was that simple.

It wasn't often that Gwynn met someone who seemed more clueless about this time and place than she was, so for a moment she just looked at him, not sure what to say.

Finally she shook her head. "Do you then plan to wear a sign around your neck that says Do not ask me out to places for I am terse and cranky?"
