Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai smiled at the students once they'd all entered and taken their seats.

"Morning everyone! Today we're going to learn about dating. It's an important part of the modern high school experience for a lot of students and with Homecoming coming up in a few weeks, I want to give you all the information you'll need to have a wonderful time."

She launched into a short lecture on old-fashioned courtship rituals and how they evolved into modern dating. She also gave out a packet of handouts on Homecoming, Prom, Dating, and Safe Sex.

"Now, I'm going to pair you up and I want you to try asking each other out on dates. In this day and age, it's perfectly acceptable for a girl to ask someone out, so I want both of you to take a turn doing the asking. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to answer any questions you might have."

Zuko frowned. "I don't think this will be a problem either way."

"Have you seen some of the ladies here?"

"Yes," he shrugged, clearly not seeing what that had to do with it.

"Some of them do not take terse rejection well."

"Then they shouldn't ask me out," he replied because it really was that simple.

It wasn't often that Gwynn met someone who seemed more clueless about this time and place than she was, so for a moment she just looked at him, not sure what to say.

Finally she shook her head. "Do you then plan to wear a sign around your neck that says Do not ask me out to places for I am terse and cranky?"

"No."

He might have considered it, but it seemed to be too much effort to figure out how he was supposed to write that.

There was that word again.

She might be considering asking Nadia to make him a pretty sign...

"Then perhaps you should try giving a lady bad news in a nicer way?"

He'd probably say no to the sign to.

Zuko shook his head. "It is not like anyone will be asking."

"Can I get you a bodyguard to go with that suicidal attitude?" She smiled at him. "It might make you safer."

Zuko smirked. "I don't need a bodyguard."

Gwynn snickered. "Honestly, though, if you plan to be rude when breaking a girl's heart, perhaps you might want to make sure you protect yourself."

"I control fire," Zuko replied. "I can handle myself."

"Oh, so you're a demon, too."

Zuko scowled. "No."

"You're like Belthazor."

"I'm not. He's not a firebender and doesn't have as much control over the fire," he replied. "Neither do I change faces or have the capability to move from one place to another."

Gwynn looked confused and then her face lit. "Beginning demon?"

Zuko however scowled even more. "Do I look like a demon?" he asked. "I can't change my face." The scar should pretty much prove that.

"Belthazor doesn't look like a demon," she pointed out. "You're just as cranky and terse as he is."

"Belthazor can make himself look like one," Zuko said. "I don't." Except for the part where he has a blue mask hidden in his dorm room that might look demon like.

"That just means that you could be a different type of demon. Maybe it's something that is new and you're not aware of it. Maybe Belthazor can help you."

"I. Don't. Need. Any. Help." Zuko ground out. It really was not a good idea to argue with him about this.

Yep, she needed to get him a sign.

"You are getting cranky."

"No kidding," he snarked.
