Ethics (September 14, 6th period)

If the classroom looked a bit like a discount Swedish furniture store had exploded inside of it, well...at least the projectiles were now easily replaceable.

Which might be a good thing.

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

"Lorelai's a beautiful name, but I can see why you use Rory. It's a lot easier to say." He reached over and briefly rested his hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently before he let go. "And irony doesn't even begin to cover it," he said, grimacing slightly. "But I guess it's my turn. Jack Harkness, I was born in the Fairview Genetics Lab, which funnily enough is on Fairview, and I'm taking this, Criminal Justice, and Constant Vigilance 2 ~~and sleep well and keyboard free!~~."

"It's also my mom's name," she replied. "Keeps things less confusing if I go with Rory."

She sighed. "I have no idea what to not lie about in here. It's not as though the teacher doesn't already know exactly what I think of him and this class, and I'm not really hiding anything anymore. My biggest secret - which you knew anyway - took off."

"I don't know, either," Jack admitted. "But he only said no lying. He didn't say we had to be serious." He glanced up at the teacher, then back at Rory and smiled. "For example, I've never been turned into a bright pink bunny rabbit."

Rory grinned. "Funny, neither have I. I also haven't ever...tapdanced down the halls while singing showtunes."

He nodded encouragingly. "Perfect. Though if you do decide to tapdance and sing showtunes, let me know." Grinning, he tapped his fingers on the desk while he thought. "Plotting to take over the school with only my not inconsiderable natural charm and a spork? Never happened."

"You'd get along well with Marty if you did," Rory noted. "Let's see...I've never attempted to eat my weight in cheesecake. But that's probably just a matter of time."

"I don't think this is what he had in mind," Jack said, jerking his chin towards the front of the class. "Which is good. And as long as we stick to the letter of the rules, we should be fine." He tipped his head to study Rory. "Speaking of cheesecake, I've never taken you out for cheesecake. I'd like to rectify that sometime."

"Sure," Rory said with a smile. "I don't have someone to be unreasonably jealous of such an outing anymore. Which reminds me - how are things with you and Cedric and Sam?"

"And I'm happy to take advantage of it and monopolise your wonderful company for an afternoon," he replied, then grinned, happy to answer her question honestly. "Things with Sam and Cedric are incredible."

"I'm happy," Rory said, and since she wasn't allowed to lie, it was very sincere. "The last time I talked to Sam about it was early in the summer, and she was happy then. I'm glad to hear the trend's continuing."

"Thanks, Rory. So am I." He waited a heartbeat, then leaned towards her, looking very curious. "So, you and Sam were talking about me? What did she say?"

Rory thought back. "It was awhile ago, but she said things were fun and that you're not the falling in love type, and we both agreed that that's too painful anyway."

That made him pause. "Oh." But he guessed it made sense - Sam had made it clear it wasn't something she'd planned. "Well, as long as my reputation for fun and good times keeps getting spread around..." he teased.

"Somehow, I don't think you're in danger of anyone thinking you're unfun," Rory giggled.

"And false modesty probably counts as lying, so I have to say I think you're right." Jack was making an effort not to sound smug, but it wasn't very successful. "Especially if people see me with the incomparable and beautiful Rory Gilmore."

Rory blushed dark, dark red. "I wonder if perceived truhs count? Because I'm all set to argue with you on that 'beautiful' point."

"Truth is in the eye of the beholder?" he asked, only partly serious. "Because I'm not lying when I say that." Deliberately avoiding asking a direct question, so she could side-step the subject if she wanted to, he said, "And I'm not sure why you'd think you weren't."

"I have self-esteem issues," Rory replied, turning redder. "I'm too thin, among other things."

"Okay. So just because two people are being honest about the same topic, doesn't mean they agree," he said thoughtfully. "I feel like there's some sort of valuable lesson I should be learning from that, but it seems like too much effort." Jack studied her for a minute then smiled. "And I'd continue extolling your virtues, but I don't want to make you blush any more that you already are. So I'll just tell you that you always make me feel good when I'm around you, and then I'm going to offer to change the subject."

Rory laughed. "And I always feel good when I'm around you," she replied, grinning. "And I wonder if Vader's going to be mad because we're daring to laugh in his oh em gee, so intimidating class."

Across the room, Vader didn't exactly looked pleased, no.

Not that it was easy to imagine him ever looking pleased.

"Ha! Let him. He said no lying, and we're not lying," he said very smugly. "And I think this is the best way to get to him. There's no reason we have to be morbid or emo just because he wants us to be. And there's almost nothing that can't be manipulated into something fun."

"Not if you try hard enough," Rory said, nodding. "I mean, fun is relative. And learning is supposed to be enjoyable. We're following the assignment. There's no reason for us to be unhappy about it just because he's a bitter, horrible, wheezy person."

"Exactly," Jack said gleefully. "And suddenly I don't think this class is going to be as bad as I thought."

"Really, I can only go up from the way I thought this class would be after last week," Rory replied, rolling her eyes. "Also, I'm imagining Vader wearing pink bunny ears now, and it's hilarious."
