Library [09/07]

Rory shuffled into the library with her laptop and several notebooks as well as highlighters, pens, pencils, protractors, erasers, and textbooks.

She actually had homework to do again. Best time of the year.

"And we would never want that," Rory agreed woefully. "I mean, you get hurt candy bars, and then they start unionizing and there are protests and it's a mess."

"They go all melty and misshappen when you try to eat them," Willow said, similarly woeful. "And don't even ask about the yummy inside fillings."

"I know," Rory sighed, shaking her head. "And you can put them in the fridge in the hopes that they'll harden up again from the cold, but it's never the same."

"It really isn't," Willow agreed. "It's like when ice cream goes soupy. Either you drink it then or you've lost the ice cream joy forever."

"My mom used to make soupy ice cream into milkshakes," Rory told her. "And they weren't like, the best ever shakes, but it was better than wasting ice cream. That's probably some kind of federal crime."

"Like folding down the pages of a book," Willow agreed.

"Yeah, I don't care how many people say that dog-earing a book just shows it's loved. It's book abuse," Rory replied, shaking her head.

"They should be drawn and quartered," Willow said. "Break the spine and we're talking honey and ants."

"I think exceptions should be made for accidentally spilling coffee on books or leaving rings," Rory added. "But only occasional exceptions, and only if they're really sorry."

"Depends on the type of book too," Willow said. "Like if it's something off the Bestseller list that's not as bad as something from 1857 since, you know, lack of replacability."

"Yeah, people who hurt the old books should be thrown into the scary part of special collections," Rory agreed. "I mean, that's why we're supposed to wear gloves. Other than the scary things in there trying to bite us."

"I noticed that was one of the questions on the form," Willow said. "Does that happen often?"

"Well, the last time I was in there, a book bit me because we left them out for awhile," Rory told her. "They only get cranky if you don't take care of them."

"Poor little unloved books," Willow said. "Oh, speaking of, I don't suppose you have any that you don't want anymore? I'm trying to collect some for libraries in need."

"I don't know of any here," Rory mused, "but I know I have a bunch from my personal library that I can let go. Are you just doing it as an independent project, or is it for college apps or something?"

"Independant," Willow said. "Peter's libraries back home are lacking in the book department and I wanted to help. I figure I can collect whatever people are willing to give, then sort them all out for appropriateness due to time and dimensional issues. There's bound to be libraries somewhere that need them."

"Aw," Rory said, smiling. "Yeah, I have a ton of books I can give, especially if I write to my friends at home and ask them to ship some that I left in Stars Hollow."

Willow looked hopeful. "Youl'd do that? Really?"

"Of course!" Rory said. "Everyone should get to read and I have duplicates of most of my books anyway."

Willow squeaked with excitement and went to pounce on Rory with a hug.

Rory hugged her back, of course. "And if you need any help with the organizey stuff, let me know."

"Do you think we should hold an official book drive?" Willow asked. "Like make it an event? Give a book, get a cookie?"

"We did that for the teal deer last spring and it was a hit," Rory said. "We had brunch and people just had to make a donation, and it went well. So that might be a good idea!"

"Ooh, even better!" Willow said. "Maybe we should make it in a few weeks? Give people enough time to find books or get books sent from home like you're doing?"

"That's probably best," Rory said, nodding. "Plus, if we sit on it, we'll probably be able to talk student council types into helping out with it."
