Library [09/07]

Rory shuffled into the library with her laptop and several notebooks as well as highlighters, pens, pencils, protractors, erasers, and textbooks.

She actually had homework to do again. Best time of the year.

Rory was back. And wow, did she not look happy.

Door has a stack of books. Well, actually she has two stacks of books - she's returning The History of the Sweater and Dewey & the Decimals, Learning Games and Activities and checking out A comparative guide to the Library of Congress and Dewey decimal classification systems, Divided by a Common Language: A Guide to British and American English, and The Princess Bride by S. Morganstern (the non-abridged and boring version with more politics and lessy kissy parts, but she doesn't know that yet).

She also has a library aide application, which she brings up to the counter atop all of that. "Hello," she says quietly to Rory. "Am I meant to turn this in here? Or directly to the librarian?"

"Oh, here's fine," Rory says distractedly before glancing up and saying," Oh my God, you're the hurt girl from the sixth floor. Hi! Are you feeling all right?"

Door slides the application across the counter and does some quick mental arithmetic. "I am, yes, thanks. Would you be Rory?"

She nods, taking the application. "How'd you know? I would've introduced myself but you were kind of big with the ow at the time."

"I was mostly out of it," Door admits. "Evie Carnahan said that you and Hermione and Seely took charge of things. And Bridge, of course - he was there when I woke up in the clinic." She smiles. "Thank you for that."

"Bridge is a good guy like that," Rory smiles. "I didn't really do anything. I just opened the door, kind of, and then you fell out, and I was bossy and made people leave so Bridgey and Seely and Dawn get you to the clinic." She bites her lip. "Why were you up there, anyway? I mean, if you can talk about it?"

Dawn; Door adds another name to her mental tally of people she needs to meet when she's actually conscious.

"I was running away," she says, moving the books she's returning off her stack, and folding her hands atop the others. "I opened a door and went through it; didn't really know where I'd end up."

Rory snags the stack of books to be returned, adding them to the small pile behind the desk. "That kind of happens here," she says thoughtfully, looking at Door. "I didn't know any of the sixth floor doors were like, portals to other worlds, though."

Door blinks. "They might be; I've not been back up there to look at them," she says. "But I made the door from home myself."

Rory stares at her. "How? Like in the cartoons where Bugs Bunny has a hole he ordered from Acme, and he just pulls it out of a pocket and hops through it?"

"I'm not really sure what you just said," Door admits. "Except for I don't keep doors in my pocket, I just open them. Sometimes they're already there and sometimes I have to make them be there."

"Could you make a door in the floor right now?" Rory wonders. "And is it hard? And do you have any control over where they go?"

"I could. Walls are easier though, because doors expect to be in walls." Door considers the other questions. "It depends on how much I've been doing it and how far away they lead. Just to the other side of a wall is easy enough if I'm not worn out, and unlocking something that's already there, I can do most of the time. Ones that lead someplace else are harder. I've never opened one that went out of London before."

"That's a really cool power," Rory says admiringly. "I can't do anything interesting like that. Is that a common thing where you're from?"

Door shakes her head. "It's just in my family." She glances down. "Which I suppose means it's just me now."

Rory tilts her head, and bites her lip again. "I'm sorry," she offers quietly. "Recently?"

Door nods. "Just before I came here. That's why I was running."

Roft lifts half her mouth in a sympathetic smile. "There are lots of people around here who know what it's like," she says. "I mean, if there's talking you need to do, or that kind of thing."

"That's a pity," Door says, with the same half-smile. "Not that there are people to talk to, but that they know what it's like."

She nods. "I'm a new member of the club. But Fandom residents have a way of making things seem okay even when they're awful. Part of the charm."
