Ethics (Thursday, September 7, 6th period)

If there was one thing Darth Vader excelled at, it was making a memorable first impression.

He waited until the classroom was full, then stalked in, cape flaring behind him.

He twitched his fingers as he reached the center of the room and the door slammed shut behind him.

"I am Darth Vader," he intoned over the even mechanized breathing of his suit. "I trust you have already heard of me." His masked face scanned the faces in front of him. If he was at all affected by the negative thoughts and emotions being directed at him, he wasn't showing it. "You will refer to me as either Darth Vader or Lord Vader. Any other address will result in detention." He began pacing the room. "You should be grateful for that. Very few have ever been granted advanced warning of my actions.

"Today we discuss how far over the line you would go to save someone you love." Vader's voice turned cold. "I don't want to hear that you wouldn't go over a line. Would you lie for someone? Steal for them? Kill for them? Does it matter to you if it's friend or family? Does how much you love--" and yes, the word sounded awkward coming from that particular visage, "--that person affect how far you would go for them?"

Vader crossed his arms over his chest and waited for the first student to speak.

"Lie. Steal. Cheat," Rory answered immediately, her voice low and cold, but surprisingly steady. "I'm not sure about killing. It's never come up. In theory if someone I loved deeply was in danger, I'd do everything within my power to save them. And after the fact, if I couldn't save them, I'd do everything I could to make whoever hurt them suffer."

Alanna considered the question for a very long moment. "I would kill for someone I loved. I have killed for someone I loved." She corrected herself.

"There's a line?" Seely asked.

"Whatever it took," Krycek said with quiet conviction.

"If it's someone you love? If it's someone who's important to you?" There was no hesitation in Jack as he answered the question. "There is no line. How can there be a line? If you're trying to protect them, that's the only goal. Everything else is irrelevant."

Gwynn may have looked a little confused and maybe just a little frightened. This teacher scared something in her, and she didn't scare easily.

"For the right reasons, there has been no line," she managed to make her voice come out steady. "I do what needs to be done and deal with the ramifications of the actions afterwards."

"Pretty damn far," Isabel said quietly. "I'd kill if I had to protect someone I love."

"Lie, steal, kill, die," Bel said. "All things I'm willing to do for love."

"Whatever I needed to do," Tyler said, voice steady. "I'd risk myself. I'd lie or cheat. I've never killed, but I could and would hurt someone pretty bad."

Aeryn spends the time everyone else spends answering questions just watching. Maybe it's because she's a little ball of seething rage right now or because the helmet actually reminds her a little of the ones Prowler pilots wear, but she's not intimidated, even though she should be. Sigh.

"It all depends on the circumstances. I'd do whatever I had to in order to protect or help them, but the situation has a lot to do with it.. It all depends on how many people were affected by the actions I took." She's glaring the whole time.

"There is no line," Zero said flatly. "There can't be. If it's someone you love, you'll do whatever you have to." Then something occured to her. "But..."

Jamie sat back and thought about the question. "Honestly, I've broken some laws in order to protect people I care and at least thought I've loved. But when it comes right down to it? I think the bigger question is 'What would you do for a Klondike Bar?'"

The mind of the teacher wasn't accessible, but that didn't mean it wasn't disturbing. River looked as if she had a bad headache.

"I would lie, steal, hurt and kill for those I love," she said, "but I would make sure I didn't do more than absolutely necessary." She looked directly at the black mask. "I would make sure I didn't turn into those whom I protected my loved ones from."

"No line unless you make one," Stark said quietly. "If I thought I could save someone, if I could have saved..." He stopped, shook his head, and continued. "I'd do what was necessary. Killing isn't necessary, not usually. But if I had to, I would."

Sam was not at all thrilled to be in this class, but tried to keep her mind clear, except for the answer to the discussion question. "If you love someone, there's no line." She'd killed more than a few people defending Jack and her teammates.

Her professor was a killer just not the kind she thought.

D glanced over at the TA for moment then briefly regarding the rest of her classmates before crossing her arms and answering, "I don't see how that is anyone's business but my own."

"I'd lie, I'd steal, I'd cheat," said Elizabeth quietly. "I'm -- I'm honestly not sure if I could kill anyone. I'd die myself if that was what was needed to save them. But killing --" She hesitated again. "I really don't know and I don't think I'd be able to tell you until I was put in that situation."

Dana paused for a second. "It would depend on the person. And the love."
