Fandom High Library, Wednesday, 9/6

Angela came in a little late, clutching a mug of chai and a bagel like lifelines. She loaded a copy of the Sims into her "new" laptop and started trying to keep a very whiny miniature couple alive.

The library was open.

After Ms. Readman came in, Angela put a stack of applications on the counter and waited to see who would appply.

Angela's gotten bored with the first family and made another one.

Of course, Martinique seemed to have nothing better to do than flirt with the Michael Stipe-looking Sim.

It was like a soap opera.

Bridge wanders in to the library, killing time since he doesn't have any classes except Hunting, and that's not till last period.

Angela saved her game and looked up. "Hey, Bridge. Looking for someplace quiet?"

"Yeah," he smiles slightly. "I don't wanna be by myself, but I don't wanna be surrounded by people either, right now. So... library."

That got a tiny smile. "It's been kind of a downer couple of weeks." She pointed to the shelves. "We have, um, books and stuff."

"Books are good," Bridge notes. "Do you know if you guys need any more help in the library this semester?" he asks, after a minute of silently going over a shelf of books on computer repair.

"The new librarian's going to hire a few more people," Angela said. "I think she's finalizing the forms now. Why, are you looking for a job?"

"Yeah," Bridge nods. "Hasn't been much call to repair stuff lately. So," he shrugs.

"I guess everyone who wants an appliance that dispenses candy has one," Angela said. "Shame. Anyhow, I'll call you when the applications are out."

She squinted curiously, suddenly aware she had spent a lot of time with Rory and almost none with Bridge. "Are you doing okay, with -- stuff?"

"Only when I don't let myself think about how much I miss him," Bridge admits.

It's not that Door didn't realize there was a library here earlier - it's that it's taken her this long to twig that it's actually for use by the students. That in theory she can check books out and take them away with her. It's sort of like having free run of a pie shop, only less sticky.

She does wander up to the counter after a moment, though, as a bit of browsing confirms that she doens't entirely understand how everything's arranged here. Which would be when she spots the library aide applications.

"Excuse me," Door asks the girl behind the counter, "but what's the ...Dewey Decimal System? I know decimals are counting by tens, but after that I'm lost."

"It's a way to organize books," Angela said. "It sorts the nonfiction by topic areas. I think we have a handout about it somewhere."

She rummaged around under the desk before coming up with a slightly crumpled piece of paper. "Here it is. And the signs on the shelves show which books are where."

"Thank you." Door studies the sheet, and nods slowly. "My father did that with his library, but it was much less detailed." She looks at the stacks with a combination of awe and covetousness. "Then again we had fewer books."

"Was your father a librarian?," Angela asked. "We prettty much have every book ever, here, in Special Collections even if it's not on the shelves."

"No, just a...scholar, I suppose you could say." Door's eyes widen. "Every book ever?"

"As far as I know," Angela said. "Or at least, everything anyone's ever looked for while I've been here. Which I guess isn't quite the same thing."

"Possibly not," Door agrees, though already she's wondering if the books and maps her father spent much of his life collecting are all somewhere on the shelves in this place, neatly arranged in numerical order. She glances again at the list of categories, looking rather like, well. Pie shop. "There's more types of book here than I've ever heard of, though. It should last me a while."

"Enough to last anyone a long time," Angela agreed. "Do you want to start with anything specific, or just look aroound and get your bearings?"

"Hey," Bridge smiles as he spots Door, giving her a fingerwiggle in greeting.

Door wiggles her fingers back, then asks, "Does that actually mean you want toast? Or that you're offering me some? Cally wasn't entirely clear about that."

Bridge shrugs. "Apparently I can't help saying it when I say the word 'buttery'," fingerwiggle, "which explains the toast connection. But it also works well as a general kind of wave-hello-type thing."
