Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

"Exactly," says Jaye, brightening. "Actually, if you tell Lorelai I sent you on a field trip for this, she might give extra credit."

Sadly, Jaye doesn't think she's joking.

Luke grinned. "I'm glad to hear it. So...what planet are you from?"

He was aiming for Han Solo-esque suaveness.

He missed. A lot.

"I've been hearing that a lot," Luke admitted. "I don't really know how long it was between him leaving and me."

He swallowed hard, then blurted. "But he's been dead since before I was born."

Jaye looks at him like she's expecting there to be something else. Maybe a just kidding. And okay, she got through fourth period, but now she might cry. "Oh. You're sure? I mean, um. Yeah, stupid question."

"Well, we weren't like, close or anything," she says. "We kind of hung out." She does not say got drunk together because that's bad form even for her.
