Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

Luke watched her, looking stricken.

"I'm sorry."

"Hey, it's not your fault," she says. "Sorry back."

"I never knew him," Luke said. "It's harder for you."

"Well, we weren't like, close or anything," she says. "We kind of hung out." She does not say got drunk together because that's bad form even for her.

"What was he like?" Luke asked.

She thinks about it and says, "He was cool." Ugh, past tense. She hates that she's already using it. "Every time we got together I had fun. Kind of a dork, but in a good way."

"I saw the tights from the play," Luke said, nodding.

"Yep," she says, smiling a little. "He and I were the Zombie King and Queen for the world's weirdest Christmas pageant. I think we totally gave up on the choreography and ended up tangoing across the stage. There's video of it somewhere."

Luke laughed. "I'll need to see that. In all of my imaginings of what I thought my father would be like 'tangoing Zombie King' never even crossed my mind for some reason."

"Well, that means you have common sense," she says.

Luke laughed. "You might be the first person ever to say that to me."
