Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

Aeryn looks over the syllabus, figuring she might do all right for the next couple weeks. Then again, next week is E-mail. That part she's not looking forward to.

Aeryn had no idea why it occurred to her that she might have a class with Luke, especially this one. Seriously. She gives him a little smile and asks, "Settling in all right?"

"It's been a little bumpy," Luke admitted, "but I think I'll be fine."

"Good. It's an adjustment, just like anything else," Aeryn says. "I don't know why I didn't figure you would be in this class. I should have."

"It's nice to recognize a familiar face," Luke said, scooting a little closer. "It means I don't have to introduce myself."

"It has to be difficult," she says, because Luke doesn't seem to have any particular problem with new people in general.

"Once it gets around, it'll be fine," Luke said, trying to convince himself, "but for now...it's hard."

He had no idea why he was telling her this.

Aeryn nods. "He was loved by a lot of people. It's nothing against you," she assures him.

"If there's anything you need, I'd be more than happy to help," she adds, and feels a lot less weird about that than she would have expected. .
