The Library [9/4]

Yomiko arrived at the library bright and early, a cup of coffee from the Perk in hand. She was pulling a little wheeled suitcase with a very nice briefcase strapped to it. She set the briefcase on the desk in her office and did not open it. Then she opened the suitcase, took out the books she'd taken from the library the week previously, and set to work reshelving them.

It was her first real day of work at this job. She hoped everything went well.

Yomiko was poking around on the library computer. What was up with all these stored searches for romance novels?

THe new school year meant it was probably time to meet her new boss. A little skeptically, Angela came into the library fairly early in the day and looked for the new librarian.

It had tro be the person playing with the library computer, right?

"Hi, are you Ms. Readman?"

Yomiko looked up at the red-haired girl and smiled. "I see my reputation precedes me. And you would be...who, now?"

"Angela Chase," Angela supplied. "I'm one of the aides you kind of inherited from-" she frowned. "Three librarians ago. The other one's Rory Gilmore."

"Angela!" Yomiko cried. "Oh, yes, I met your boyfriend the other day. Wow, you do go through librarians around here, don't you?" She might look a little worried about that.

Angela looked sheepish. "We had two with fur in a row?" she ventured. "And since you look pretty fur-free, you might last. I hope." She didn't want to deal with a fourth librarian before she graduated. "How did you meet Marty?"

"Fur? Really? Wow. I hope I last, too. Oh, he was at the coffee shop the other day."

Angela nodded eagerly. "One of them was blue and German and could teleport. The other one was an orangutan. They were nice, but..." She shrugged. "So do you have any plans for the library yet?"

"Oh, I don't know," Yomiko said vaguely. "I'd like to get a better understanding of this 'Special Collections' business. And do you think you and Rory are enough, or do we need more help in here?"

"Special collections is scary," Angela said. "It has anything with magic in it. Oh, and some, I guess, erotica, which is gross. And it's bigger inside than it should be, and sometimes really weird stuff happens. The first rule is not to go in there without gloves."

She considered Yomiko's question. "I think we could probably use one or two more aides?," she ventured. "Five felt like a lot, especially if we had a librarian who was actually around, but two's not enough."

Somehow, she didn't think Mr. Joker wanted her to investigate the erotica...unless he did, in which case Special Operations was a lot weirder than Yomiko had previously been aware. But... "Did you say 'magic?'" she asked faintly.

"Five does seem like a lot, especially if we were all in here at once," Yomiko agreed.

"Magic," Angela repeated. "Spells and all sorts of weirdness. And one book did this whole diminsion-swap thing on me that was truly bizarre. Are you a witch or something like that?" After a year in Fandom, she could ask the question with only mild interest.

"And yeah, five aides felt like too many. Though it was good, 'cause it meant we only had to open one day a week each." She tapped on the counter. "When do you think you'll start trying to hire people?"

"'Something like that,' yes. I can do things with paper."

"If we hire two more, then each of us will only have to open one day a week," Yomiko mused. "But I'll probably tend to show up early, so that might not be necessary. I'd like to get them hired as soon as possible, so they can learn the ropes."

"Sounds like a good idea," Angela agreed. "What do you mean, 'do things with paper'?"

Yomiko folded a little origami butterfly out of a stray piece of copier paper and held it out in her cupped hands. After a moment, it flew out of her hands and started fluttering around Angela. "Like that." Well, that's a very small example, but she doesn't want to tip her hand or startle anyone.

Angela blinked at the butterfly, eyes following its flight. "Pretty," she said. "That's a coool talent to have,"

The butterfly landed on the desk in front of Angela and stilled, turning back into an ordinary piece of folded paper. "It's come in handy," Yomiko said softly.

Angela wasn't sure how it would, but she believed the new librarian. "Are there any days you'd like me to open for now?," she asked. "Until we hire new people, I mean."

"Well, that depends. Are there any days you're free? And what about the other girl?" Yomiko asked.

"I doon't know Rory's schedule," Angela said. "But I only have three classes, so must of my schedule's pretty free. Tuesdays tend to be bad, but that's about it. We should probably ~~figure it out OOC~~ all talk together to set up the schedules."

"Yes, ~~talking about it OOC~~ that would be a good idea," Yomiko agreed.

((OOC: And as soon as my friends leave I'll get on AIM so we can do that.))

Angela nodded. "I'll see you later," she said.

[OOC: I won't be home for another two hours anyhow, so no rush.]
