Library, 8/28

Not being able to stay away one more minute, Yomiko had collected the library key from the office skeletons, narrowly avoiding freaking out all over the place. Really, skeletons? What kind of place was this? She unlocked the library and peeked inside. "Hello? Is anybody...oohhhhh..."

And then she was off, wandering through the stacks like a kid in a candy store.

((The library is open! Come meet the new librarian. No OCD, as it is still summer, la.))

Lyra walked purposefully into the library. She was tired of not knowing what everyone was talking about.

It was cooler inside than she'd expected, she didn't know how the insides of buildings stayed so cold in the summer. She looked around, trying to see if someone was there.

"Hello?" she called after a moment. "Is anyone in here?"

A young woman of apparently Asian descent (save her blue eyes) came out from behind a row of shelves, carrying a large stack of books, which she set down on the nearest table. "Yes, hello? I'm Ms. Readman, the librarian. Can I help you?"

"Oh, hello." Lyra turned, tucking a strand of her blond-brown hair behind her ear. "I need a book on demons. The bad kind."

"There are other kinds?" Yomiko asked, then said, "That should be in the 130s, Paranormal Phenomena."

"Yeah, there are." Lyra looked around, trying to figure out the system, and faled miserably.

"Uh, 130s? Which way are they?"

[this is funny because I'm a librarian ^.^]

Yomiko looked around, kind of lost. "Uhhh, it's my first day? Oh! Over there," she said, gesturing to a row of shelves.

((Hahaha, and I'm so not.))

Lyra smiled, "I know what you mean. It's bigger than my last school."

She glanced over at the shelves Yomiko pointed at. "Thanks."

She wandered over to the shelves and started picking books at random, and soon was sitting on the floor with a bunch of them piled around her.

Eventually Lyra took her books (only two, and slim volumes, at that) to the front desk. Pan sat on her shoulder with her library card in his mouth, and they waited for Ms Readman to notice them again.

"Did you find everything you were looking for?" Yomiko asked. "Aww, what a cute little...um, is it a ferret?"

"No, he's a daemon. But he'd formed like a pine marten, not a ferret. See, that's why I need the books. Everyone looks at us funny, 'cause they think he's one of the bad demons, but he's not. I figured if I have to correct everyone, I should know what the bad ones are."

With that rather confusing explanation, Lyra put her books up on the counter, along with the library card. She wiped it off first, though.

"Oh..." Yomiko said, nodding as if this made any sense. She checked out Lyra's books and said, "Here you go. And would you like a bookmark?" She held out a slip of paper with flowers printed on it.

Ms Readman was the first person who didn't look at her like she had three heads, or look confused, which was a bigger relief than Lyra would have thought. Of course, she was the librarian, it only made sense that she'd know these things.

"Bookmark? Yeah, sure." She slipped the bookmark between the pages on one of the books and handed the card back to Pan. "Ta very much."

She slipped out of the library, shoving the books into her messenger bag as she went.
