Library [08/15]

Rory hurried into the library bright and early, and settled herself behind the desk with her laptop.

She spent a little time looking up sonnets, since it had been awhile since she'd read her favorites anyway, then left that open in a tab.

If anyone came along, you see, she could switch to it quickly from the Wendy the Werewolf Stalker fic she was reading.

Sam started repeating that, until he got to the last part. "Wait, what do you mean the people are getting washed out?"

"Just that," Dean said with a shrug. "Not you or the green glowy ex-girlfriend, you're still the same. Or glowy. But Rory's looking more faded."

"He says that some people look more faded than others, like Rory," Sam explained. "But you and I are still all right."

It felt to Dawn like she'd just had several large rocks settle in her stomach. "He may be stuck in another dimension. Was there a portal?"

"There was a flash of light and I woke up on the floor," Dean said. "Didn't seem like a portal, least not the kind I've experience with."

"It didn't look like a portal to either of us, just a bright flash of light," Sam said. "And it wasn't like the last portal we dealt with. But, it was a pretty bright flash, so I know I didn't have my eyes open the whole time."

"That's too bad. If it's a portal..." Dawn said slowly, realizing she might be messing up her relationships with both Winchesters, "I might know how to get him back."

Sam blinked at her for a moment. "Congratulations, you've just officially won my undivided attention."

Dawn couldn't look at Sam, and hoped she wasn't looking at Dean. She let her hair fall forward, hiding her face.

"You wanted to know why I'm green and glowy to Dean--it's because I'm not completely human. I'm what's called the Key of Dagon. My, um, my blood, if it falls as part of a ritual, can break down dimensional barriers."

She looked up suddenly and tried to pin Sam with her eyes. "Buffy can't know."

All Sam could do was stare at Dawn in amazement. "I won't tell her," he promised, "mainly because I don't think I'd even know what to say." He gave her a much more serious look-over this time around. "You...look completely human," he said lamely.

"Feel completely human too," Dean put in.

"And you..." Sam made a face in Dean's general direction. "I don't want to repeat that."

Dawn shot a look in the same direction Sam had, just on general principles. "That was the point--there was a skanky hell god looking for the Key to use it to get to her home sweet hell dimension, and they made me this way and gave me to someone to protect who could stand up to her, so she couldn't get home."

"So that's how Buffy's your sister, but the Buffy here doesn't know you yet," Dean said in enlightenment.

Sam nodded, having traveled down the same line of thought as Dean. "They sent you to Buffy. And since you're here and in one piece, I'm assuming that plan worked?"

"Mostly," Dawn blinked back sudden tears. "But there were some problems in the execution--I got bled, and the dimensional walls did fall down. Someone else closed the portal."

"You got bled?" Sam asked. It was kind of a difficult thought to get past.

Dawn nodded. "Ask Dean. He's seen the scars."

"I've seen them," Dean confirmed, remembering the long thin lines on Dawn's stomach. "And no way someone's cutting on you like that again. There's got to be another way of getting me back."

"Yeah, I agree," Sam said to Dean before turning back to Dawn. "Is there any way to use your...power that doesn't involve hurting you?"

Dawn shook her head. "No. I'm really energy trapped inside a Dawn-shell. As far as we know, there's no other way to let it out. So unless you know another way of opening a portal..."

"We'll find one. I'll find one, if that's what will work," Sam said. "Or we'll find another solution. Dawn-shell or not, we're not going to hurt you for this."

"Sam!" Dawn said, exasperated, "there is no other way, trust me on this. Call Giles and...wait, we probably shouldn't do that..." she reconsidered, "and if it'll get Dean back, I'm willing to do what's necessary."

"I appreciate it, Dawn really," Dean said, seeming to forget that she couldn't hear him. "But I don't want..." He trailed off at the look in her eyes as if she really could hear him. Or maybe just knew him well enough to guess what he was saying. He sighed. "All right. But only as a last resort. We look for another way first."

"Only if it's absolutely, without a doubt the last resort," Sam said, adding his own embellishment to Dean's words. "There has to be another way. Not that we both don't appreciate it, but you don't need to do something like this for us."
