The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 4)

"Now that you've mastered the art of the clever escape, it's time to master the speedy one."

Harper tapped a control, bringing up the empty cells from last week. "After all, breaking out of your cell is only the beginning."

"Your objective today is to make it to the spaceport on the other side of this dangerous, seedy city. You can split up, stay together, try to meet up with other escapees, then beg, bluff, and bribe your way though the city. One caveat though, keep violence to a minimum, not only does it attract attention, attacking your pursuers makes it personal. This goes double for deaths. You kill someone? You fail the exercise, as does everyone you're with at the time."

[ooc: The guards and inhabitants of the city are moddable for the most part ~~since I'm kinda brain dead tonight~~ but there might be a surprise or two.]

"Look casual," Sam said, reaching for his hand. "Pretend to shop."

Casual. Right. Holding hands was normal. Yep.

Cameron looked at whatever Sam was holding. "That looks really lovely, honey." He wondered what it was.

Sam raised an eyebrow at him and mouthed honey?

She held it up against him--it was a men's mud brown linen tunic, but it had nice border embroidery in gold and silver.

He shrugged. She was the one who told him to be casual after all. He tried not to look at the troopers.

When he realised what she was doing, his eyes went wide and he looked down at the dress-thingie. "I'm not sure brown is my colour."

"Hmmm, you may be right," she took her time folding it carefully, thanked the merchant, and walked on to the next booth. The guards walked within five feet of them, and she tried not to tense.

"God, I hate my hair sometimes. It's such a giveaway," she said, after they were out of earshot.

Cameron looked up at her hair. "Well, I'm thinking it draws attention for other reasons," he remarked before quickly pretending to check out the jewlery they were displaying.

Sam glanced around, "I think it's clear." She made a beeline towards the outskirts of town, walking like she'd had a fight with Cameron--briskly, but keeping an eye out for trouble.

Cameron rolled his eyes as he nearly bumped into a guy. He motioned towards Sam and mouthed 'women' before hurrying after her.

"I'm sorry, I swear that your ankles aren't fat," he said, keeping up appearances.

Sam didn't facepalm, but it was a near thing. Amateurs. "Doesn't matter, it's the last time you'll see them, so you won't have to worry about what they look like."

Yeah, she was so teasing him once they were out of this.

Cameron did the sensible thing to do in this instance and pouted.

"You can't pout on a mission," Sam muttered to Cameron, heading towards what she thought was the way out of town, keeping to the strolling through the market plan and occasionally looking away whenever a guard walked by. "It's like a sacrilege."

"Why?" Cameron wanted to know. "Maybe if I pout, someone will tell us the way."

"Unless you're Daniel, the bad guys aren't generally big on their captives flirting and looking pathetic," Sam smirked, once again turning away.

"Daniel's a geek," Cameron argued, wondering what the guy had that he didn't.

"It makes him sympathetic, I guess," she shrugged. "Plus, he's handsome, and a lot of the female aliens we ran into seemed to appreciate that."

There was a slight huff. He never understood what Vala saw in the archaeology teacher anyway. "Okay, so you ask."

"Why me?" Sam looked a little startled by that.

"Cute, blonde, slightly geeky and sympathetic," Cameron ticked the reasons away on his fingers. "You ask."

She blew her hair out of her eyes. "Fine. You get to do this next time, though, Captain United States."

Sam stomped over to the nearest vendor, and using hand motions, she found out that they weren't going anywhere until she bought an incredibly overpriced piece of statuary. She dug in her pocket and frowned at what she found. "Cameron? Do you have any money? All I've got is a five."

Cameron rifled through his pockets. He dug out some spare change which added up to the grand sum of $4.68, lots of lint and... gum.

The merchant brightened when he saw the gum and started babbling at Cameron, pointing to it and grinning.

"Looks like you're up," Sam grinned at him.

Finally someone who understood the importance of gum. Cameron moved up to the merchant and started arguing with him. Well, mostly making wide hand gestures and some of them must have been insults because the merchant got red in the face and flapped his arms about wildly.

Still, somehow Cameron managed to get himself not only a statue, three wooden cups, a cool pen that wrote backwards and a silly hat, he also landed them a map. Apparently gum was valuable on this planet.

Smirking, he turned back towards Sam. "So, how does this rate on the Jackson scale?"

"You're going to make us need a whole new scale," Sam said, impressed. "Nice hat. What does the map say?"

"Uh," Cameron put the hat on and tucked the pen away as he tried to balance his loot. He opened the map and blinked. "I have no clue," he said as he realised that of course it was in alien.

Sam peeked over Cameron's shoulder. Not only was it necessary, but it made them look even more like tourists. "Okay, we don't have the language skills we need, so we need to look for landmarks."

She pointed to the center of town. "Okay, that's the well," she looked down at the map, "so that's the center. Now all we need is an intersection."
