Rory hurried into the library and turned on the fan immediately before outfitting the desk with both a bottle of water and an iced latte.

With these fortifications, she was ready to spend the day there.

"Do I want to know why Jaye wanted Alec to lick a building?" Jack asked. "Apart from because she could."

"I think that was the whole thing," she shrugged. "She could. And he did."

"You've got to love Jaye," Jack laughed. "When she wants something, she doesn't mess around. She just goes after it."

"And she usually wants things that make other people laugh," Rory agreed.

"True. More in the sense of laughing at than laughing with, but I wouldn't trade her for anything." Chuckling, Jack straightened. "Well, if you're sure you don't want to go ahead with the wedding, I'll have to go and find something to distract me from my sorrow and woe."

Rory pressed the back of her wrist to her forehead. "Woe! You'll always have my undying love due to knowing my weaknesses, but seventeen is too young for marriage. I'm all for a long, long engagement, though."

"I'll just have to worship you from afar," Jack said, looking rather wistful. "And maybe gaze longingly in your direction occasionally? And then when you're ready you can sweep me off my feet and rescue me from my lonely bachelorhood, which I will of course spend pining away for you."

"It might be awhile," she told him seriously. "Especially as I'm pretty sure I'm never getting married. I might come around, though."

"Even that faint hope will sustain me. Maybe I'll become a monk while I'm waiting," he mused. "Spend my life celibate, in a little cell in the side of a mountain somewhere. What do you think?"

"Not on the side of a mountain," she said, shaking her head sadly. "Way too easy. Try to be monk-like here. Sooo much harder. Or, um, so I would think."

"No, you're right. It's much easier to resist temptation when it's not walking around in front of you. There's no way I could be monastic at Fandom High." Jack didn't look at all distressed by this, he was in fact smiling rather happily. "I like it here."

Rory gave him a lopsided smile. "We do have a lot of pretty. It's hard enough to be monogamous here, let alone monastic."

"I've yet to manage the monogamous, so there's no way I could handle the monastic." Leaning forward, he whispered conspiratorially, "And I don't think I want to. Like you said, there's way too much pretty."

"Exactly," Rory said, shaking her head. "It's really too bad I've sworn it all off. You'll have to enjoy the pretty for me."

"It's more than too bad - it's a tragedy. But I think I can probably manage that. Just for you, though." Jack smiled and leaned forward to kiss her on the cheek. "I'd better go and get started. There's a lot of pretty to start working through."

"Enjoy yourself," Rory said, blushing. "And thanks again, fake fiancé."

"Anytime, Rory. And if you need me for anything, you know where to find me." Jack gave her one last smile, then strode out of the library, whistling happily.
