Baking Workshop 7/31, Monday Morning

Piper smiles as the students arrive. "Good morning. You're going to be making apple pie today. I was kind of sick this weekend so I didn't get a chance to make one for you. There are muffins from J,GOB, though. Feel free to take some."

She hands them a list of instructions. "Once again, there are a lot of instructions here, so feel free to work with a partner if you'd like. One of you can make the crust while the other makes the filling. And then you both can work together to assemble the pie. Ask questions if you have any."

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Rolling Pin

Knife

Measuring Spoons

Measuring Cups

Dough Blender

Cutting Board

Pie Pan

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

I teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

6 tablespoons butter

6 tablespoons shortening

6 to 8 tablespoons ice water

Instructions

Warm butter in microwave until soft, but not melted.

Mix flour, salt and sugar in bowl.

Add butter, shortening and ice water.

Wrap pie crust in plastic wrap then place in refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Ingredients

5 peeled apples

1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Peel and slice apples.

Soak them in water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. This will help prevent them from turning brown.

Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and vinegar in large mixing bowl.

Mix apples into the pie flavoring.

Instructions

Assembling the Pie

Now that your pie crust has had time to cool divide it into two equal halves.

Roll one of the balls of pie crust out until it is around 1/8 of an inch thick.

Wrap the dough around the rolling pin and unroll it onto your pie pan.

Take a fork and poke holes in the bottom of the crust to let steam out as it cooks.

Place the apples in the pie in a pattern so that they all fit in the pie.

Pour the leftover coating over them.

Place about 4 chunks of butter on top of apple filling. This will give the filling and crust a more buttery flavor.

Roll out the remaining pie dough and place it on top.

Create a pattern around the edge of the pie by using the back of a knife.

Baking the Pie

Cut long strips of tinfoil and place them around the edge of the pie.

Bake pie at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Take tinfoil off about ten minutes before the pie is baked to have a golden brown edge.

"I know that feeling," Bel murmured. He tried to change the subject to something lighter. "You wanna mix the flour and stuff for the filling? Me and flour don't get along very well."

"Okay," Cally said, measuring the ingredients. "You don't get along with flour, huh? Funny, I'd think you'd know all about self-rising." She chuckled.

Bel smirked. "True, but it requires skilled preparation and handling."

"I've been told I have magic hands," Cally said, mixing the ingredients for the filling.

Re: Bake

"You have that gentle but firm touch necessary for kneading the dough and making it rise?" Bel said, almost snickering like a 12-year-old.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely," Cally said, the innuendo totally not lost on her. "It's all in how you move the fingers."

Re: Bake

"Applying just the right pressure in the right places," Bel said.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"A little spit and elbow grease goes a long way," Cally said.
demonbelthazor: (Smirk)

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-07-31 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's all in the wrist," Bel noted.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
At that point, Cally broke down into giggles.
demonbelthazor: (Grin)

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-07-31 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's a good thing we're not making banana cream pie or something," Bel snickered.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Otherwise our conversation would be that much more dirty?" Cally smirked. "Hey, wouldja get the crust out from the fridge? I think we're ready to put this thing together."
demonbelthazor: (*glare*)

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-07-31 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Bel retrieved the ball of dough from the fridge and divided it in half as best he could. He gave half to Cally and started to roll his half flat, struggling not to snicker more.

Of course, the dough stuck to the rolling pin, much to his frustration. He glared at the dough.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Cally did not laugh. "Maybe a little more flour?"
demonbelthazor: (Crossed arms)

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-07-31 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"You know how I feel about flour," Bel grumbled, but he sprinkled some on the dough and started to roll it again, this time with more success. And minimal flour dust clouds.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Cally rolled out her own section of the dough without much of a bother, though she did have to finess it a bit.

"You should embrace the flour. Make it your friend. Or something."

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-08-01 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Bel used too much pressure and rolled his portion too thin and thus had to reroll it. "The flour hates me," he said sourly. "It gets all over my clothes and my hair and do you know how hard it is to get flour off of leather?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe you should take the leather off?" Cally offered.

Re: Bake

Bel looked at Cally in horror.

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-08-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Next thing you know you'll be asking me not to smoke while mixing ingredients," Bel said with a put-upon sigh.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"That would probably be a good idea," Cally said. "You got that done, or am I going to have to do it for you?"
demonbelthazor: (*glare*)

Re: Bake

[personal profile] demonbelthazor 2006-08-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Bel scowled at the slightly unevenly flatted piece of dough. "It's done as it's gonna be," he said.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"It'll work fine," Cally said. She grabbed Bel's dough and laid it out in the pan and made sure it was properly forked.

"You tell Phoebe about the thing yet?"
demonbelthazor: (Hands)

Re: Bake

"You're good at forking," Bel noted. "And, um, no."
