Festivus in July, Fandom High front lawn, Friday afternoon

Sometime during morning workshops, when no one was paying nearly enough attention except those concerned, the Fandom High schoolgrounds had filled with snow.

For the record, "those concerned" meant Rory Gilmore and several dozen snow cone distributors from the mainland. But who wants to ruin the illusion? Students who were curious might assume that it was simply a Festivus in July miracle, or some such.

In the middle of the lawn stood a bare, aluminum pole. Festivus tradition, you know.

"I might possibly have a grievance about the grievances," Isabel said, flicking some snow at Parker.

"Hey!" Parker laughed, and flicked snow back at Isabel. "I think anyone who tries may find themselves getting a snowbank facial. Is that a *real* ritual, or did they just make it up?"

"I don't know. But if it's true it's the saddest holiday ritual I've ever seen," she said. "I only caught the change to Festivus at the last minute. I'd been counting on Christmas in July. I even got mistletoe."

"You can still use it. Greg won't care that it's not official." Parker grinned, and broke off a bite of cookie. "Although it's more non-denominational, so I suppose that's fair. And we have *snow*. This can not be considered less than awesome."

"You're right. He's never turned down a kiss." Isabel reached a grabbed another cookie. Lunch today was going to be healthy she could see. "And it's cooler. I'm grateful even for one day of relief."

"And pretty. Maybe we'll get Summer in January this year?" Parker cocked her head and asked, "How are plans for next weekend coming along?"

"The biggest thing is getting hold of a car big enough. Ideally I'm thinking a Suburan or a large van. Just so we can all travel together," she said. "And as much as I'm bitching about the heat right now, I'm sure by January I'll be looking back on it fondly.

"I'm going to need you to do your magical molecular manipulation on this outfit. River got 'festive'." Parker pointed to the wet places from the snowball. "And at least Virginia never gets *too* bad. Unless there's snow monsters involved."

"Never a problem," Isabel said. "Want me to do it now? Or wait till afterwards?"

"After. With my luck, someone will see me in shiny-clean clothes, and decide to hit me with a snowball again." Parker rolled her eyes, then sobered a little. "Have you been by to see Jack? I need to see how he's doing tonight, I haven't seen him since very late Wednesday."

"Later it is," she nodded. "I stopped by last night. He doesn't look good. But Sam was sitting with him. And I told Cedric. He's going to go by and check on him."

"Good. Heh. It may blow his mind, but it's good for him to know we're worried." Parker's grin widened. "God, I'm looking forward to this trip."

"Michael used to get like that. He knew we cared, but at the same time he didn't believe it," Isabel sighed sadly. "Fortunately Maria has been good for him. And her mom. Even if she did beat him with a newspaper once."

"I am to. It'll be nice to get away for a change. See some of this part of the country. Other then the ballgame and the trip to Baltimore, I haven't seen any of it."

"What did he do to justify it? Notice I don't doubt for a second that it was justified." Parker grinned, and munched on a cookie. "New York and D.C. were my last trips; I really need to get out to see Angel sometime. Although that's in a different dimension, so maybe that L.A. doesn't count."

"Spent the night in her room and got caught there the next morning," she said. "The thing is, his stepfather had beat him up. And he went to her." Even now, almost two years later, that still bothered Isabel.

"I'd love to get out there myself. Maybe I'll have Bel take me for a weekend."

"Ahh." She studied Isabel, and said, "And that wasn't what you expected."

"You can ask nicely and Bel will do it; I may have to come up with a bribe. Ah well. Maybe if I offer to snark on Logan in his presence, he'll do it for the mockery factor."

"Not then. Although I understand it more now." She shrugged, "He's happy. That's what matters."

"He would. He's a good guy."

"The more people for back-up for the problem children, the better." Parker shrugged. "Bel's trying. But I think there's too much history for either of us to really relax around each other."

"I'm all for that," Isabel agreed. "She takes good care of him. Speaking of history, Sam is worried that you're still looking to kill her."

"Pfftttt." Parker grinned. "I've had more reason to be pissed-off as someone else since. I just haven't run into her yet. She buys me Rocky Road, and we'll call it even. I have to tease her about Jack's reaction to her Radio apology, anyway."

"Well you should run into her soon," she said. "She's worried enough about going on this trip with Jack and Cedric. She doesn't need anything else to worry about."

"Heh. Sam would worry if she *didn't* have anything to worry about. You might have noticed? Sam tends to the OCD like teal deer show up for long speeches." Parker grinned. "But I'll go looking for her this weekend, I promise."

"Good. I threatened to send you both down the river without rafts if you weren't getting along," Isabel grinned. "But since you are, that means I can steal both of you away to the spa one day."

"Ooooo, twist my arm, force me to get a manicure," Parker said, snickering. "That sounds good to me. And, uh, if you can maybe run interference between Sam and Jarod? That might be good." She shrugged resignedly. "He wasn't exactly thrilled when I told him what happened last weekend."

"Actually Sam and I had a long talk last night and part of it included a metaphor that required me to get a pedicure. Go figure." She shook her head, still bemused by the conversation. "I will if it's necessary. I think he's going to wind up so excited he'll forget about it."
