Arts & Crafts Workshop #3, Camp Dining Hall, 07.24.06, Afternoon

"Hello, campers! This week we will be knitting!" Tick said once everyone was around. "This isn't knitting just for the sake of knitting, though. Nay, chums! We're knitting because of a cause brought to my attention by Hermione Granger here!"

Where she comes from, there seem to be a race of house elves enslaved by the school. The only way they can be free is to be given clothes. And so we're going to be knitting hats. If you choose not to participate in the actual protest part of the class for your own reasons, that's fine. You can keep any hats you make and do what you want with them: sell them, give them away, or light them on fire in a safe manner after filing the proper permits. The patterns I've provided are nice and simple so you can make as many as you can or want. Feel free to improvise, though. On the calendar of creativity, improvisation is the weekend; it's filled with a much stuff as you can work into it before it's over!"

"You each have several colors of yarn, needles, and your own wits! Use these tools well!"

"If you would like any hats to go to Hogwarts, please put them in this box at the front for shipping overseas! Thank you all for whatever help you can give!"

"For your scrapbooks this week, we'll be focusing on the memories of each other in this workshop. More specifically, we'll be generating more of those memories! Open your scrapbook to a blank page. That page will be for the other students here to work on. They can add text, pictures, whatever they think will help you remember them or this workshop. You don't have to add to everyone's, but you should add something to at least one person's book."

Getting some blue yarn and a pair of knitting needles from the supplies, Alec sat down to figure it out. It was very slow going and the first hat ended up looking kind of like a knitted mess, with a lot of dropped stitches and way too many apertures for a hat.

The second one seemed a bit more hat-like even as he worked on it, needles clicking together as he mostly followed the pattern diligently.

Jamie multiplied himself a couple of times and ended up making several scary looking hats for the elves. Complete with holes for their ears to stick through.

Actually the holes were accidents and Jamie had never seen an elf before so really it was just a happy coincidence.

Hermione looks positively gleeful as she gets to work knitting her hat. At least, it's supposed to be a hat. It could be argued. Though arguining might not be the best idea. However, she can offer helpful advice.

Great. Yarn. This would end well. Despite the fact that Jude, owing to moral support for Jen in her knitting club efforts, already knew how to knit and was also very familiar with tuques.

Jude somehow managed to catscradle his wrists together before even getting started on his hat.

"Maaaan . . ."

Hats! Yay! Molly was really excited about this project. Until she actually started that is.

"This is way harder than I thought it would be," she said with a frown.

"Um, bra?" Jude asked, extending the tangle of yarn that somehow held his hands in the middle of it. "Help?"

Molly set down her knitting with a giggle and started to untangle the yarn enough to release his hands. "How did you manage this?"

"I don't know!" Jude would have flailed but, hello, hands are tied up. Literally. "I was just starting to unravel some yarn so I would have enough to cast on, and then I dropped the ball, so I had to pick it up and then it bounced . . ."

Molly giggled more. "Let me just get it loose enough to get your hands out. I don't want to break the yarn."

It took a couple minutes, but eventually Molly was able to loosen the tangle enough to get his hands free.

Jude sat patiently until he could ease his hands out of the tangle of black wool. He rubbed his wrists with a sheepish look. "Thanks."

"No problem," Molly said with a grin.

Jude chuckled. "I'm kinda hopeless with this stuff, it looks like. I should just stay around from anything I can tangle myself up in." He thought. "And vanilla."

Okay, she had to ask. "Vanilla?"

Jude chuckled sheepishly. "Yeah. I think I have some sort of anti-vanilla field that knocks over any bottles of the stuff around me."

Broots's first attempt at a hat turned into a blue and yellow scarf with a lot of holes in it.
