Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

"I never really thought about it, but there's a few things I can do that other people can't... Or so I thought until I came here. But, again, you're getting colder from my secret. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to tell you that or not... Forget I said that." she grinned.

"Probably not, but since the point of this exercise is for you to lie successfully, I'd say you're doing pretty well. Um, does your secret have anything to do with a guy?"

"I was thinking about making my secret about a guy, but I was told recently that it wasn't so much a secret... So I chose a secret that was different but doesn't really have to do with a guy."

"...does it have to do with a girl? Other than you, I mean."

"Nope, I'm the only girl involved with my secret."

Z was in the tall grass on this one. She needed, like, Bridge. "Can I give up?"

Pippi thought about it.

"Are you sure you want to? Because you've only asked a few qustions. If you want to speed up the process how about I ask you questions about your secret at the same time? We could trade question for question."

"I guess I shouldn't give up. Okay, why is the sea not involved with your secret any more?"

"Because it used to be part of the answer." she said.

"Let's see... Probably not fair just to ask you what your secret is... Does your secret have to do with something emotional or physical?"

"No. Is your secret a question, then?"

"Questions are often asked about my secret." she said. "But the secret itself isn't a question."

She thought for a moment.

"Is your secret something about how you do something? Or is it something about you?"

"No and yes. Questions are often asked about your secret, and the answer used to be the sea," Z mused. "Is your secret emotional?"

"Other people tend to become emotional and try to discover my secret." Pippi explained. "But I myself am not very emotional about it."

"You said your secret is something about you, does it involve other people as well? And if so what kind of people?"

"Why are you not very emotional about it?"

"Yes. A friend, and people who were not friends."

Pippi shrugged. "I just don't see the need."

"Is there danger involved in your secret?"

"But other people feel emotionally about it?" Z asked, trying to clarify.

Then she shrugged. "Not really."

"Mmmm, yes. It does seem to evoke emotional reactions in other people.... Did you and your friend do something naughty, that doesn't have to be naughty in a dirty way, to the people who were not your friends?"

"Why do you think that is?"

"No, we didn't."

"Because people are wierd. I wouldn't expect you to have the same reaction." she said.

"Is your secret involving some sort of operation, or activity?"

"Why not? And yes."

Pippi thought back to when she popped her head into the Careers Faire.

"Is the friend Bridge?" she asked. "And because you're part of that police force."

"No, it wasn't Bridge...your secret involves law enforcement?"

"Only if somebody else discovers the secret." she grinned. "Does your secret involve law enforcement?"

"Yes, it does," Z said. "Why would law enforcement be involved?"

"Because I would require the services of law enforcement if somebody were to take advantage of knowing the secret and I wasn't aware that they knew it. Though I've never needed the help of law enforcement in the past on the rare occasion a person or persons discovered the secret."
