Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

"No. Is your secret a question, then?"

"Questions are often asked about my secret." she said. "But the secret itself isn't a question."

She thought for a moment.

"Is your secret something about how you do something? Or is it something about you?"

"No and yes. Questions are often asked about your secret, and the answer used to be the sea," Z mused. "Is your secret emotional?"

"Other people tend to become emotional and try to discover my secret." Pippi explained. "But I myself am not very emotional about it."

"You said your secret is something about you, does it involve other people as well? And if so what kind of people?"

"Why are you not very emotional about it?"

"Yes. A friend, and people who were not friends."

Pippi shrugged. "I just don't see the need."

"Is there danger involved in your secret?"

"But other people feel emotionally about it?" Z asked, trying to clarify.

Then she shrugged. "Not really."

"Mmmm, yes. It does seem to evoke emotional reactions in other people.... Did you and your friend do something naughty, that doesn't have to be naughty in a dirty way, to the people who were not your friends?"

"Why do you think that is?"

"No, we didn't."

"Because people are wierd. I wouldn't expect you to have the same reaction." she said.

"Is your secret involving some sort of operation, or activity?"

"Why not? And yes."

Pippi thought back to when she popped her head into the Careers Faire.

"Is the friend Bridge?" she asked. "And because you're part of that police force."

"No, it wasn't Bridge...your secret involves law enforcement?"

"Only if somebody else discovers the secret." she grinned. "Does your secret involve law enforcement?"

"Yes, it does," Z said. "Why would law enforcement be involved?"

"Because I would require the services of law enforcement if somebody were to take advantage of knowing the secret and I wasn't aware that they knew it. Though I've never needed the help of law enforcement in the past on the rare occasion a person or persons discovered the secret."

"You would need...protection because of it?"

"I don't need protection because of it. But somebody else might." she said.

"When you did this thing that involves law enforcement. Were you and your friend enforcing the law? Or were the people who were not your friends enforcing the law?"

"Who?"

"One of those," Z said.

"Most people." Pippi said. "Which one of those?"

"Most people would need protection if they knew your secret. From what?"

"One or the other."

"No no. If most people, had a secret that was like mine, they would want protection from other people who would discover the secret." she said.

"When you say 'One or the other', do you mean in like 'both'?"

"Is your secret societally unacceptable in some way?"

"You mean, like, am I a dirty cop? No."

"No. It's perfectly acceptable." she said. "... Were dirty cops involved?"

"Would people knowing your secret alter your place in society or what society expects of you?"

"No."
