Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

"No. It's perfectly acceptable." she said. "... Were dirty cops involved?"

"Would people knowing your secret alter your place in society or what society expects of you?"

"No."

"Not exactly. The secret is involved with something that I do not keep a secret. It's rather obvious actually. And the thing that isn't a secret can alter my place in society or what society expects of me."

"So were the people who weren't your friends in law enforcement."

Z is so confused. "Does this have to do with your strength?"

"Yes, they were."

"The fact that I wouldn't need protection has to do with my strength. But the secret does not." she said. "Were the people who were not your friends, but in law enforcement working in opposition to you and your friend?"

"Does it have to do with your friends?"

"I wouldn't say that," Z said.

"Nope, just me." she said. "Were you in competition with these people who are not your friends?"

"Is it mental in nature?"

"Nope."

"Not mental no."

"Hmmmm... Where did this thing happen between you, your friend, and people who are not your friends?"

"Do other people know about your secret already?"

"Newtech City, California."

"People? No."

"Were you and your friend working with these people who weren't your friends?"

"Animals?"

"Nope."

"Yes. A monkey and a horse." she said.

"Were these people who are not your friends aware you and your friend were around?"

"Oooookay." Z wondered if Pippi's secret was that she was certifiable, then remembered this was Fandom. "Does your secret involve, like, a place?"

"They became aware of us."

"Yes."

"How did they react when they became aware of you?"

"Is it a town?"

"They reacted appropriately."

"No."

"Describe this appropriate reaction to discovering your presence."

"A city?"

"In accordance with regulations."

"Nope." she said. "Explain, in detail the regulations these people who were not your friends reacted in accordance with when they discovered that you and/or your friend were present in this undisclosed location in Newtech City, California."

"A country?"

"I'm sorry, could you repeat the question?"

"Well, I should probably clarify. The place is in a country and a town but isn't the country or town itself."

"I'll clarify this as well. You are being truthful in your answers to my questions about how these people who are not your friends reacted when they discovered the fact that you and your friend were around, you are being obviously evasive. So I am now asking for answers with more truth and less evasion." she explained.

"For instance, regulations aside, were they happy or unhappy to see you?"

Z looked confused. "So is it like a building?"

"The point of this game is not to provide full disclosure, and you know it. But I would say they were less than thrilled."

"That's true." Pippi said. "But the idea, I thought, was to lie by telling the truth. If you are being clearly deceptive, you're tipping your hand to the person you're lying to with the truth."

"And my secret does involve a building."

"I've been telling the truth."

"Could you specify the type of building?"

"Everything okay?" Jarod wandered over, having overheard Pippi's last comment. "You're right, Pippi, the point was to get Z to tell her secret, but it's also not an interrogation, deposition, or cross-examination under oath. It's okay not to press for quite that much detail."

"Also, the point of evasion isn't always to hide the truth. Sometimes you just need to point someone else in the right direction," he smiled at Z, "for instance, if you had to provide a tip to a reporter for the good of society, but couldn't say things outright because of an ethical obligation."
