Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #1, Monday Afternoon, Park

Jarod stood in front of the class, a little more nervous about teaching this particular subject. He handed out the syllabus, then some informational sheets, worksheets, and #2 pencils. "Good afternoon. I'm Jarod, and I'll be your instructor for the next seven weeks. Hopefully the class will be both fun and educational for everyone. In our first class, we'll be looking at who you are: If you're looking to play a role, you have to know yourself, to know which roles are best for you. If you're looking to catch a conman, you have to know how to get inside their head, which is generally called profiling and will be something that you'll have to get into with a different teacher."

"So, today, you'll be taking a personality profile. Once you have those results, check out
this guide of career choices based on that profile. It'll be easier for you to play a part if it's natural to you. If you're looking for a conman, it'll be easier to predict which careers he or she might gravitate towards."

"Have fun, and ask me any questions, but today's just a way to get started."

Syllabus:

Week 1: Choosing a Role: Know yourself, and learn what you can and can't pull off convincingly

Week 2: Learning the Lingo: Every profession has its own jargon. Class will be held in the Library.

Week 3: Lying without Lying: How to tell the truth. Just slightly shaded.

Week 4: The Bluff: Oops. You're clueless and stuck. Now what?

Week 5: Finding Confederates: Which friends do you want or need to make to help you?

Week 6: Dressing the Part: What you wear can support the lie and inspire trust. Class will hopefully be held at Stuff for Sale.

Week 7: Knowing When to Get Out: Someone's always on your tail or about to catch on. Learn the signals and how to trust your instincts.

Week 8: ~~The Pretend~~ Putting it all Together: See how you do. Class will hopefully be held in the Danger Shop.

"I don't know, I think the results are pretty accurate," Jaye says, once she's done eavesdropping and eyerolling.

"You think I'm enticingly near to perfect? Why, Jaye, I'm touched."

"I haven't seen any problems so far," she reminds him.

Jack grinned. "It's so nice to have an appreciative audience." He may have rolled his eyes in Cameron's direction. "What did you end up with?"

Jaye smiles a little at the eyeroll. "ISTP," she says. "Or, istp."

"Hmmm...Inherently seductive and transparently provocative?"

"I think I like that better than the official description," she grins.

"And just think of all the jobs you'd be suited to," he offered, smirking as reached out to tug gently on a lock of her hair. "What's the official description?"

"Introverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving, I think," she says. "See, yours is better."

"Mine is definitely better - but I hear that a lot - I say we adopt my definitions, make them our official descriptions. I'm sure Jarod won't mind."

She really has no choice but to agree with that. "Have I mentioned lately that I like the way you think?"

"Once or twice. But I think it's the company I keep." He nodded pointedly at her. "You just have this affect on people."

"I have an effect?" she repeats.

Jack nodded. "You do. You encourage people to have fun, to be a bit wild. Not that I need the encouragement, but I really appreciate the effect it has on others."

"I bet," she says. "Maybe I should get out more. Be more encouraging."

"It's almost your moral duty." He nodded, grinning again. "Speaking of encouragment, did you bring the sign back?"

"It's already hanging up in the living room," she smiles. "I'm thinking about having it laminated."

"Mounted on a plaque," he replied gleefully. "With a little frame around it. Shirtlessness is a serious business, after all."

"As well it should be," she says. "It'd be wrong for a person to take it as anything but."

"Shirtlessness is the highest calling human beings can strive for." He paused, grimacing. "Some human beings. Others should keep their shirts on for the good of all people."

Remembering the Peter Griffin towel incident, Jaye visibly shudders. "Agreed."

"Not you, though." Jack grinned and raised his eyebrows. "According to the radio, you're embracing shirtlessness in a major way."

"So I hear," she says. "Shirtlessness as therapy. Remind me to thank Cedric for that."

Jack grin wandered into smirk territory, but his voice was perfectly innocent. "Next time I see him I'll do that. Just for you."

"I'm sure you will," she says, and just as innocently, says, "So, uh, you missed Fourth of July. We were deprived of Jack kissy, you know."
