Baking Workshop 6/12, Monday Morning

Piper smiled at the students as they arrive. It might have been a nervous smile. She pointed out today's assignment. "We're making snickerdoodles today. Chocolate ones even because chocolate makes everything better."

"Oh, and the first one of you to ask me if they're made of people gets detention," she continued, wondering if she could really abuse her power like that.

She hands the students a list of ingredients and instructions. "As usual, I'm around if you have questions or need help with anything."

"Try not to burn the classroom down," Piper added, remembering what happened last week.

Anders spent about fifteen minutes going over the instructions. "Aw, this can't be that hard," he told no one in particular. "And no open flames this week."

He carefully preheated the oven and started measuring out his ingredients. The only thing that really stuck him for now was the bit about how the butter had to be softened. How do you soften butter?

With a shrug, Anders set the stick of butter down on the counter and started pummelling it with both fists.

Willow watched Anders beat up the butter.

"Serves the cookies right for mocking us."

Anders gave her a sheepish smile.

"Well, they haven't yet, but I'm trying to get the jump on 'em."

Re: Bake

"It's right there in the name," Willow said. "First they mock, then they draw pictures of our humiliating downfall. It's very traumatic, really."

Re: Bake

"They what?" Anders stopped pounding on the butter; it was pretty well softened by now, though there was probably less than half a cup inside the wrapper thanks to wayward splatters of it all over the counter. "Oh. Snickerdoodles. Right. I hear you make good cookies though. I don't think they'll be mocking you."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Chocolate chip," Willow said, modestly. "I can also put together an oatmeal, so then you can pretend you're eating healthy. I've never tried snickerdoodles before."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"They don't look that hard," Anders replied, although his expression didn't make the statement very convincing. "You have previous cookie experience, at least. This'll be my first time."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"It'll be a piece of cake," Willow assured him. "Well, except for the part where it's cookies."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, cake's way easier to -- is that where that expression came from?" Anders shook his head and scraped the butter into his mixing bowl along with the eggs, sugar, and one and a half times the amount of vanilla he was supposed to use. "Probably not."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cake's not too bad when you buy a mix," Willow said. "Alternatively you can skip that part and just eat the frosting right from the can."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I make a mean cake from a mix," said Anders. "Well, cupcakes actually. I'm trying to cut down on the frosting, though. I used to eat pretty healthy when I first got here, but Zero introduced me to junk food and I've slipped so bad on my diet ever since."

Careful this time to not turn on the power before he put it into the bowl, Anders grabbed the mixer and blended the ingredients. "Okay, wow, that smells good already. Frak, the oven!" He darted over to set it at the right temperature (for once) before going back to the next step. "One of these days I swear I'll remember that at the right time."

Jude was in a good mood this morning. Which led to a little spinning of bowls before he set them down, a little cheerful twist of the wrist as he turned on the oven, a little bounce in his step as he measured out the butter and set it on the heating oven to soften.

"Well, aren't you in a good mood," Pip said as he cracked his eggs. "Anything interesting happen?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude shrugged, still grinning. "Not particularly. Life is good right about now, bro. Just enjoyin' the moment."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Pip nodded. "Good reason to be happy. Specially when cookies are involved."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's always a good day when cookies are involved," Jude nodded mellowly, juggling his eggs for a moment before doing the one-handed crack.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Pip raised an eyebrow. Juggling eggs? "So life is just good?" he asked. "Because I'm starting to wonder if life is, in fact, more than merely good?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Could be."

Another egg started at one wrist and rolled along the line of Jude's shoulders to the other hand before it, too, ended up in the bowl.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If Pip's eyebrow could raise any higher, he would tear his forehead.

"So, any particular reason life is so much better than good?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Setsuna," Jude replied, satisfied. "She kissed me on the cheek and we snuggled. Hence, good mood. There were some frogs involved at some point, too."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Pip grinned and gave Jude a thumbs up. "A sucessful evening ineed. Good work."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks, bro." Jude flashed a thumbs up right back. "I'm just hopin' Ranma doesn't try to punch me again or anything, 'cause that? Would totally harsh my mellow."

Cookies, somehow, were less intimidating than cakes. Maybe just because they were smaller.

So Stark set to work on making cookies. Preheating the oven? Easy.
Mixing things when you didn't bother to soften the butter? Less easy. But doable. Hopefully. It was just taking a little more effort.

Maia read over the recipe several times and smiled to herself. This was so much easier then crepes over an open flame. She was going to love this.
