Book Fair

Giles had gotten up at ack o'clock and actually had toted five boxes of books to the Fandom High Gym before he "cheated."

Everything was now set up neatly on tables, and separated by genre.

There was also coffee and hot water urns, bottled water, and a variety of pastries and breads set on a table near the register.

The First Annual Fandom High Book Fair was open for business.

[ooc: Hang on to your collective hats while I get the OCD threads up, please.

Threads are UP. Whew. I think you all know how this works. Go look for a book. Up to you whether you find it or not. No, there is no magic/new age section. Yes, Giles has planned it that way.

That's it! Go to town! Wait. No. Stay here and buy stuff...]

This is always Hermione's first stop, just because this is where all the most useful information usually seems to be. She spends a lot of time poking through the titles, looking for anything that she might use.

Zack was totally not looking for books on Egypt. "Hermione."

"Zack," she greets him. "How are you?"

"No complaints," Zack grinned. "Yourself?"

"I've been all right. Quiet and busy," she says, making a face of the I've never had to research mummies before kind.

"That's always better than the alternative." Zack made a similar face, although his was more I have, but they were all dead and inanimate like they should be, and have I mentioned lately this place hurts my brain?.

"I suppose," she says, this time with a gesture that means But at least it's interesting.

"You think that's a possibility?" Zack blinked and shook his head No, I don't think Fred Astaire is to blame for this.

"Here? Quite possible," she says, nodding a Well, if you're sure...

Of course, she didn't really expect anyone outside of Japan to appriciate the value of Edo era romance novels, so she's hoping there's at least an appriciation for Edo era history. And Meiji. Definately Meiji.

She's also looking for books on Genghis Khan.

After Flying, Peter stopped by the Book Fair for a few minutes. He immediately was engrossed in Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684869314/qid=1149880269/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-8119525-2640912?s=books&v=glance&n=283155). He also held a copy of To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684869314/qid=1149880269/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-8119525-2640912?s=books&v=glance&n=283155).

"Hey, Peter," Elizabeth smiled at him as she wandered across looking at A History of American Law (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684869888/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_3/102-1125043-2627317?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) and holding International Systems in World History (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0198780656/qid=1149881643/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-1125043-2627317?s=books&v=glance&n=283155). "Have you finished your first history book yet?"

"Good afternoon, Elizabeth," Peter replied with a grin. "And I have indeed though it ended just after Vietnam so I have some catching up still to do." He looked at her book curiously. "What's that one about?"

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth grinned. "Yeah, you're still missing thirty years. Although you could probably skip the eighties," she said, winking. She glanced down. "It's suggesting studying international relations in a different way, and looking at how our political systems and interactions with each other have changed."

[[ooc: Hee! Thanks! I'm trying to get hold of A History of International Law myself!]]

Laughing, Peter said, "I'll keep that in mind. Might you have any books to recommend to cover the gap? That one sounds perhaps a bit dry, but interesting."

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth giggled, and glanced across at the shelves. "How about this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099219425/026-2132093-7583655)?" she asked. "This is up to 1997. I think you'll find that there's not quite as many general history books around for more recent times, so you'll be better off finding something you're interested in and then looking for a book on that subject." She grinned. "It's um, yeah. Probably more textbooky than what most people look for."

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter looked at the book she offered and laughed. Picking it up, he flipped through it. "This looks too funny. I'll have to read it." He nodded at her suggestion. "Yes, I think I'll do that. Or perhaps I'll just keep reading the history I'm familiar with from a different perspective," he said with a gesture at the books he'd been flipping through. "Perhaps a bit, but if it's what you're interested in."

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's plenty of different perspectives around, yes," Elizabeth nodded. "Or there's other countries and such. One thing I'm sure we'll never be short of is history!" She grinned. "It is. I'll enjoy it."

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's all that matters then," Peter replied with a grin. "Did you enjoy the workshop yesterday?"

"I did, yes. I've not been traumatized by being outside with it, despite rains of pudding, so that's good," she said, winking.

Re: Non-Fiction--History

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, because trauma caused by custard falling from the sky could be very difficult to explain to one's family," Peter replied, laughing.
