Things to Do at the Beach #3, Galactica Point, Friday Morning

Jarod waited for the class to arrive under a makeshift tent. Next to him were plastic shovels and pails. And a large group of kittens that had gotten curious about what he was doing and had decided to sit in. One or two were in the pails, either playing or curled up and sleeping.

"Good morning, everyone. Unfortunately, because of Fandom's...eccentricities," he looked at the kittens, then the pudding, which occasionally glopped from the sky, "I don't feel safe sending you out on the water today. But that's not all that you can do at the beach," he continued, "Today you'll be making sand castles--but they don't need to look like castles, if you feel like being more free form about it. There are also frisbees and a volleyball, if you want to play with those instead."

"So what do you do if you can't shoot them out of their fort?" asked Janet. "Besiege the place and make sure that no one can leave the port?"

"Maybe if someone tries to feed him a kitten treat, he'll leap off your head?" she asked. "You mean you're not caught up on technology yet? Veronica's right, you should work on your Google skills. Though you've adapted amazingly well to modern America and this place."

Archie took the tiny jolly boat from one of the model boats and started pushing it up toward the rock face. "It usually involves a landing party and the ship's complement of marines, yes. Damned risky operation unless one has a fleet at one's disposal, which makes a nice fat target for the fort's gunnery crew."

He smirked a bit. "Oh, I've found a few interesting things online as it is, though I've a few things yet to learn about making my searches more specific. She's giving me weekly lessons in modern technology, which helps." With a slight hint of trepidation, Archie added, "She wants me to get a cell phone, as well."

"Naval operations really aren't my strong point," admitted Janet, looking interestedly at the sand fort and the battle scene. "I'm much more familiar with tactics for land battles. So does this mean that the marines have to storm the hillside and take the gunnery stations one at a time? That sounds...bloody."

"Things like what?" asked Janet, curious about why he was smirking. "A cell phone is a good idea. Not that I don't think you're extremely capable, but you never know when you'll need to call in for backup."

Archie went into a totally handwaved because his player doesn't remember either OMG brief explanation of the sort of tactics the Royal Navy would use in such a situation, moving the ships around to illustrate. "Bloody wasn't the half of it."

"Oh," he added, "music, some interesting bits of amateur fiction . . . as I said, my Google searches aren't quite specific enough yet. And I suppose I'll have to get that cell phone sooner or later. If I don't, she'll headtilt at me until I do."

"No, definitely not," said Janet. "Battles are always far worse than any description of them. Thanks for the explanation, though. I think tactics are fascinating."

"Bits of amateur fiction?" asked Janet. She raised one eyebrow and looked at Archie. "Like...about sports?" Also she tried not to snicker and failed miserably.

"Tactics were never my strong point," replied Archie, whose broad smirk answered the question quite well. "Give me a sword and a pistol and put me in the boarding party, and I'm in my element, but planning the operation might have been best left in other hands."

"I'll stick with the back lines myself," said Janet, trying to suppress a fit of the giggles. "Damage control. For after those of you with the swords and the pistols get yourselves shot up."

"I remember zombie weekend. With you in the back lines, those of us with the swords and the pistols couldn't help feeling confident," Archie told her, still smirking.

Janet grinned. "Thanks. Medicine's a calling, I guess. I have some fond memories of that weekend, oddly enough."

"It was oddly endearing, wasn't it?" Archie launched a few more cannonball-pebbles down at the boats from the fort, careful to not actually hit them. The kitten apparently decided this looked like fun, and leaped out of his hair to chase the pebbles around.

"Dear God! It's a furry sea monster!"

"When you get around the fact that there were decaying corpses after our brains," said Janet, somewhat dryly. "But we did come together as a school." She covered her mouth and giggled at the kitten. "Who knew creatures from the deep were furry?"

"Clearly, it's a Fandom sea monster," Archie replied as the kitten pounced on the model frigate. "Here now! Watch that rigging! It took me hours to get that right!"

"I'd often heard it said that staring death in the face had the power to unite people, but sometimes I wonder if the person who came up with that phrase ever intended it to be quite so literal."

"We needed something to take the squid's place," said Janet, nodding seriously. "Do you think you can get its claws detangled from there?"

"I highly, highly doubt it," said Janet. "On the other hand, you never know. I get the feeling that zombie invasions aren't all that uncommon in some dimensions."

"Zombie dimensions? I wouldn't rule out that possibility either." Archie reached down to pick up the kitten, which thankfully hadn't gotten too tangled up with the ship's rigging. "You're very cute, but you'll never make a good topman," he told it as he set to work setting its paws free. The kitten merely gave him a disdainful mew and swished its tiny tail, then started batting at the mainmast.

Archie looked ruefully at Janet. "I think it's a kraken in disguise. Maybe I'll name it Davy Jones."

"It's an unpleasant possibility. Could you imagine if we got a zombie student? Ick." Janet shuddered. "I think it's a good thing I don't see any miniature sailors. They'd be crushed."

"A kraken in a cute, fuzzy kitten disguise?" Janet nodded. "In Fandom, I'd believe it. He can keep Cam-Mollusc company." She reached out to pet the kitten again. "That's a good name for him. He can be the scourge of sand castle pirates."

Re: Build Sand Castles

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2006-06-10 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Archie wondered to himself if he might, on some level, qualify as a zombie student. "God knows we already have the band at Caritas. I think the drummer's hand might have been done for last night after I asked him to play the bodhran."

The kitten mewed loudly in apparent appreciation of his new name, and arched his tiny back into optimal petting position. "I think he approves of the name," noted Archie. "That ought to worry me."

Janet, being an expert on death on several levels, would probably reassure him. If she knew. "The band is more than enough for me when it comes to zombies. Did you take it easy on him after that?"

"Probably," agreed Janet. "But you can deal with it later, when he reveals his kraken nature." She glanced at her watch. "I should get going. I need to pick up a mocha, unexpectedly run into Veronica, and get back to the dorms."

"I did, but I'm not sure Seras did; I should go as well. I've a bit of research to do today, I think."

Archie gathered up his boats despite Davy Jones's protests and patted the side of his sand fortress. "You'll be well enough stormed when the tide comes in," he told it.
