Library [06/08]

Rory managed to make it into the library fairly early, dragging the damn book with her as well as her laptop, with a cup of coffee in hand and four wide-eyed, fluffy kittens firmly attached to the legs of her jeans.

The library was open, and would likely remain so for most of the day.

Tyler was flipping through an illustrated book (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/895517.html?thread=44139037#t44139037) Jamie had given him, trying to find a picture of a child mummy.

he finally found one (http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/merenre3.jpg), and almost jumped out of his chair in excitement.

"This is it," he said loudly. "This is what was playing with me on the beach last night. I mean, not the same one, but it looked just like this."

"Crap," Tyler agreed, running his fingers over the picture as the reality of what this meant set in.

"Maybe they're all that small?" He did not look hopeful.

"There are mummies in town," Rory murmured. "Oh God. Do you think they're harmful? The wee bitty one didn't want to hurt you, right?"

Tyler shook his head. "He seemed scared. And a little hyper. Maybe he lost his parents."

"I don't know," Tyler said hastily. "But it does make some sense if it really was a baby, and not some midget mummy race."

"Maybe they'll go away on their own," Rory mused fretfully, knowing perfectly well it wasn't true. "Or maybe we need to do a study group 2.0 and send out search parties."

She grabbed a notebook and started scribbling down notes.

Xander followed her, and when he saw the picture, echoed her in more than just action. "Mummy. I see your oh crap and I raise you a gaaaaaaah."

"Yes. Bad. It was playing with Tyler and this is bad," Rory said fretfully.

"It was playing?" Xander blinked. "Did this playing involve trying to kiss him and suck out his soul, not dirty?"

"No!," Tyler yelped. "I was trying to talk to it and figure out if it was a student or something and it was screeching at me and running away, but not in a scary way. Or a dirty one. Ick."

"Well, mine didn't look like that until after she kissed me," Xander said defensively. "I take it yours didn't start out looking human and then change?"

Tyler shook his head. "It always looked like that," he said, stabbing his finger at the picture. "You made out with a mummy?"

"Hey, she was hot." Xander frowned at the memory. "And really nice until the life-sucking thing started."

Jamie looked at the picture and gave Tyler a weird look. "You played with that? Man I hope you've been vaccinated for the bubonic plague."

"I thought it wanted help," Tyler defended himself. "It was less playing, more trying to get it to take me to the clinic."

He looked sad. "It seemed lonely."

"Lonely? As opposed to say... I dunno... Dead?" Jamie said looking at it closely. "Seriously. This thing was running around? Did it try to suck your life force away or anything?"

Tyler shook his head. "It just kind of screeched at me and ran away. I got a piece of bandage from it."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a wadded scrap of tobacco-colored gauze. "I touched it and this came off."

"Huh," Jamie said looking at it. "Maybe Greg can look at it and run some tests on it or something."

"I should've just chucked a rock at it. Smashed its skull in."

That made Tyler perk up. "Around here, that should be pretty soon."
