Library [06/08]

Rory managed to make it into the library fairly early, dragging the damn book with her as well as her laptop, with a cup of coffee in hand and four wide-eyed, fluffy kittens firmly attached to the legs of her jeans.

The library was open, and would likely remain so for most of the day.

"Yeah. Where's your section on the paranormal? I'm looking for stuff on waking nightmares, hallucinations, mind attacks, that sorta thing."

The black and white kitten had squirmed out of Dean's hands and was once again trying to climb him like a tree. "And maybe kitten infestations."

Rory raised a brow. "You know about paranormal stuff? Or is this just a new 'yay, Fandom is weird' kind of interest?"

"Fandom is weird, but I've been dealing with weird almost my whole life." Dean grinned. "It's sorta the family business. My dad's a hunter -- demons, evil spirits, curses, shapeshifters, that sorta thing. If it's evil he hunts it down and kills it."

"...want to help with something?" she asked hesitantly. "'Cause I kind of have a vested interest in all the stuff going on lately - the nightmares and kittens and pudding. 'Cause it...might be kind of my fault."

Dean looked at her more sharply, an effect that was partially ruined by the kitten that was now perched precariously on his shoulder. "How is it kind of your fault?"

"I read a thing," she said, feeling very much like she would like to hide under the desk. "And it kind of summmoned, um, plagues. I'm still working out how to stop it, though."

Dean managed to refrain from rolling his eyes. God save us from people who read from things they don't understand he thought. Aloud though he only asked, "What 'thing' did you read?"

Rory held up her book. "This thing. We think it's a modified Egyptian Book of the Dead."

"Okay, just one thing? For future reference? Most books that have 'dead' in the title, you don't want to be treating as casual reading material."

"It's not my strongest language," she told him, blushing a dark crimson. "I tend to work phonetically when translating stuff."

"All right," Dean said, judging from Rory's expression that she probably wasn't going to be randomly reading things she shouldn't at least in the near future. "What's done is done. So do we know what we're dealing with? Some kind of curse? Or a summoning of some sort? Or just a haunted book?"

"Cursey thing," she said. "We have kitties and pudding and coffee and stuff, and the nightmares, and Tyler saw something wee and scary in town that might be related. Right now, we're just trying to figure out how to stop it all."

"Do we have a better description than 'wee and scary'?" Dean asked, latching onto the one thing that sounded like it might be something he had experience with.

"Dead-looking," Rory told him. "Made shrieky noises. Tyler got a piece of it."

"Got a piece as in hit it or got a piece?" Dead looking and shrieky probably meant zombies or ghouls or something else like that. Or possibly a spirit though not if if there were pieces getting involved.

"...not dirty," Rory clarified, because it never hurt. "Got a piece like some of its skin or something. I didn't get a good look. It was icky and didn't seem all that important."

"Could've been a way of identifying exactly what it was maybe," Dean said absently. It definitely sounded like some kind of zombie or ghoul. "Did it try to eat him?"

"No, he said it was little and seemed scared," she replied. "Maybe it was a baby."

"Probably not a ghoul then. They're kinda like undead eating machines and the small ones are just as bad though they tend to try gnawing on your kneecaps instead of ripping your throat out."

"That's...fun," said Rory, gulping and unconciously rubbing her thumb over the scar on her neck.

Dean noticed. "I take it that's not from overly enthusiastic kittens?"

She cracked a smile. "No. Vampire bite from last year. Kind of had a tiny bit of an issue with sharp pointy things going near my neck since. So here's hoping these things aren't bitey, whatever they are."

"This school's just a laugh a minute, isn't it?"

"Well. Kitties," she pointed out, holding one up. "So it's not all just big baddies."

"I'm not sure if that's a plus or a minus," Dean said dryly as the kitten on his shoulder swiped a paw at his nose. "I've got Leadership class this morning and Sex Ed this afternoon, but after that I can help out with any research. Sammy too -- he's the real research geek in the family."
