Writing Workshop - 6/6 - Journalism Classroom - Tuesday Morning

Chloe was on her laptop when everyone started coming into the classroom, checking various news sources for 6/6/06 madness. Once everyone had arrived, she finally set the laptop aside.

"Good morning! Okay, so today we're going to sort of finish up our trip through the wonderful world of non-fiction by talking about one of my personal favorite kinds of writing - news stories. It really is an art to be able to give all the necessary information about a story in the tiny space that newspapers and magazines usually give a reporter. Editors can be ruthless people, let me tell you."

"So, what I want you to do for me today is to give me 50-100 words about something that happened while you all were in the cabins these past two weeks. It can be something really simple, or something amusing, but the only thing is, it has to be true. We're going to be talking about making up the news next week."

"By my standards, you were!" exclaimed Janet, sticking her tongue out at Liz. "You were lazy."

"I was up ten minutes later than you!" Elizabeth retorted, sticking her tongue out at Janet in return.

"That's why I never hit the snooze button on my alarm," said Janet. "Besides, it's not like you didn't get to warm up after the showers."

"No, you've never spent an extra ten minutes in bed at all, have you?" Elizabeth said lightly. "Not as warm as I'd have liked to have been though."

"Not when there's a hot shower on the line," said Janet. "I'm sure there were ways to warm up. Maybe you can warm up better in the dorms?" she suggested innocently.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes yet again. "Pardon me for thinking that the warm water would last more than a couple of showers. There was more hot water in Kosovo! Heck, there was more hot water in Antarctica," she said. "Not that particular day, unfortunately. Although if you wanted to show me ways of warming up later, I'm a very good student."

"You know, I figured you'd just wait until the water heater had time to heat up the water again," said Janet, rolling her eyes. "I didn't realize it bothered you that much. And of course I'd help you warm up. Or show you how to."

"Ew. No. Shower," Elizabeth said nodding firmly. "Mmm good. Have I mentioned how much I love being back in the dorms recently?"

"The beds are much more comfortable," said Janet, biting back a smile. "And there's privacy."

"See, I was still thinking about hot showers, but I definitely agree about the beds and the privacy," Elizabeth nodded, looking completely innocent.

"I think they're all very good things," Janet said seriously. "Also, I like Parker, but she can be tough to deal with in close quarters."

"She also can't tell me off for what I'm reading now," Elizabeth said gleefully.

"She was what? Why?"

"Apparently I should read fiction on vacation. And then we swapped books; I gave her one of my thrillers and I got a trashy romance." Elizabeth looked dubious at that. "She got the better deal."

"Well, maybe you should, but I certainly can't lecture you on that, given what my vacation reading has mostly entailed," said Janet. She grinned. "Angelica Demenses, huh? They're, um. Something else."

"That would be her. Is English even her first language?"

"Does she even know basic anatomy is the other question you should be asking," said Janet.

Elizabeth blushed slightly. "Yes, there was that aspect to it," she agreed.

"You're not used to trashy novels, are you?" asked Janet, amused. "We both do too much serious reading."

"Um, no. Not at all," Elizabeth said. "I do read fiction; it just tends to be more classics, or thrillers."

"Classics, at least, count as serious reading," said Janet. "I dn't know about thrillers, since I don't generally read those."

"Definitely fiction. Parker approved of the one I leant her at least."

"That's something," said Janet. "Did you tell Parker you didn't like her book?"

"I told her it was trash, yes," Elizabeth said, shrugging slightly.

"Well, it is," said Janet, giggling. "I think that's why she and Zero started reading them."
