Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

The main campfire had been turned into a tropical paradise... without the tropics. There were leis and grass skirts to wear, tropical music playing, a buffet table, and the infamous Limbo Stick of Destiny, an artifact brought back to America from World War II. Noody knows what happens when a person wins a limbo competition involving the Limbo Stick of Destiny, but several experts on the subject suggest that "absolutely nothing happens except maybe you win a little trophy."

It was party time at the Fandom High Summer Camp.

[OOC: OCD is up. Yes, there is pig, poi, and sometimes the band will switch from generic tropical music to 60's beach movie music, or maybe reggae, or Raffi. They're unpredictable like that.

"That would be totally handy," Buffy said. She couldn't off the top of her head think of a situation where she had needed it, but she had no trouble picturing some in the future where she would. "Do they work on all sorts of demons? Do you know anything against vampires? What I use is, like, stake and cross and holy water and sunlight. Oh! And once all I had was this li'l-li'l Xacto knife? And the vampire had a really thick neck so I just had to keep going at it, and... that's kinda gross, huh?"

Sam had to bite his lip hard to keep from laughing, and shook his head. "That's...okay, to a normal person? Yeah, that would be kind of gross. But my family's in the business of digging up graves and burning old, moldy bodies to get rid of the person's evil spirits. An Xacto knife to the neck isn't the worst mental image I've gotten."

He looked out at the campfire for a moment, shifting a little closer to Buffy without really thinking about it. "When Dean told you were were like boy slayers, I'm going to assume he didn't mention that we don't actually have vampires where we come from."

"You don't have vampires?" Buffy stared at him. "...I like your world already."

She smiled a little, though, pleased that she hadn't freaked him out with her story. She was kind of proud of the Xacto knife moment. It had worked, hadn't it? Sam moving closer might also have helped her mood some. She nearly reached out for his hand again, but ended up just putting it on the log, next to him. Just in case.

"I think I like your world. Vampires sound better to deal with than some of the things I've seen," he said a little wistfully.

Sam reached down to put his hands next to his sides on the log, and found one of Buffy's hands already there. He gave her a slightly nervous look, but then he saw she was smiling, and left his hand right where it was over hers.

Buffy's smile widened at his touch, and when he left his hand there, the happy beaming could probably be spotted in town. "I've really only fought vampires, but Mer--I've been told there's other things as well. What kind of demony evil have you seen?"

Sam did his best to not grin too wildly when Buffy didn't move her hand either. "Well, it's not just demons. I've seen ghosts and poltergeists and shapeshifters, and other things you're probably better off not knowing exists."

"Yeah, well, slayer," Buffy pointed out. "I found out things do go bump in the night the hard way." She made a face, remembering. "Merrick just plopped me down in a graveyard and told me to wait. I was, like, super-bored, and then the vampires started digging themselves out of graves. I was less bored then."

"He didn't just leave you there by yourself, did he?" Sam asked, sounding kind of appalled. Even his dad wouldn't be that insane.

"Of course not. He was standing behind a grave, telling me to stake them in the heart," Buffy nodded. "'Cause when you do that, they go pooof! Only dust gets all over and I could never wear that jacket again." She looked sad at the memory of her lost jacket. "It was nice and yellow, too."

"I bet it looked nice on you too," Sam said, smirking. "I think this Merrick guy and my dad would get along well. They seem to have the same 'throw them in head first' style of training."

"In Merrick's defense-" and when had she started talking to people about Merrick? "-I totally didn't believe him. I mean, this weird old dude comes up to me and tells me I'm the Chosen one and there are vampires and stuff, while I'm, like, thinking about homecoming themes. I was like 'Dude, what are you smoking?' you know?"

"Yeah, I can imagine that being kind of a shock. We get the same reaction a lot when the people we help realize what's really happening around them," Sam said. "As funny as this is going to sound, I almost wish I could have had a moment like that myself, instead of having to deal with it before I could even talk."

"You were only wee-little?" Buffy pictured a li'l cute Sam standing bravely in front of an evil demon and totally melted. "Awww." She squeezed his hand a little.

Sam smiled softly at the hand squeeze. "I was only six months old when my mom was killed. Dad started hunting not too long after that, so...yeah, we've been doing this our whole lives. Which, granted, hasn't been that long. But it's been long enough."

"That's pretty harsh," Buffy sympathized. She was silent for a moment, trying to imagine being a normal Slayer-in-training and doing pretty much what Sam had described. She couldn't. It was too weird.

Moment past, she turned to him with a curious look. "What's your favorite weapon?"

"Oh geez, you want me to pick one?" Sam laughed. "I'd probably say a .45. It's good and solid and doesn't always make a huge mess. What about you, do you just stake everything?" he asked. He made a stabbing motion with his hand which, without a stake, might have looked a little dirty.

Buffy unconsciously copied his motion, as she nodded. "Mostly, yeah, 'cause stakes can go anywhere with me. Knives tend to get confiscated." She looked wry for a moment. "And... I actually don't use guns. All it does is piss vampires off, anyway, and it's more of a danger of hitting innocents." She brightened. "I'm liking archery, though, now that we can finally shoot stuff."

"I think archery's going to be a lot more interesting once we get arrows with sharper tips." Sam grinned. "So does the whole silver bullet thing work on your vampires? I know all about weapon confiscation - that's why we tend to drive everywhere, and keep the weapons locked in the trunk."

Buffy shook her head. "Not as far as I know. Should work on werewolves, though, but I've never met one." She shifted a little closer. "Do you, like, drive everywhere? Do you have a house somewhere? Well, not you, but, like, your dad?"

Sam shifted closer in turn, casually moving his hand so that he was holding Buffy's hand and not just resting over it. "Yeah, we usually just drive. It's kind of hard to get the kinds of weapons we have on planes. And no, we don't really have a house. We move around too much. Sometimes we'll stay in one place for a few weeks or months if Dad's trying to find something good to go after, but never long enough to set real roots down."

A slight blush painted Buffy's face a nice rose as her hand was held. Sam was such a cutie. "So that's why you said that about Dean and you being, like, best friends?"

Sam noticed the blush happily, and nodded. "That's exactly why I said that. Dad's got some friends, other hunters he's met while we've traveled. And they're good people. But when it comes to people our own age, Dean and I only have each other, which has its upsides and downsides."

"I can imagine," Buffy nodded. She was silent for a moment, just enjoying being there, holding hands with a cute boy. Then her curiousity got the better of her again. "Are you from this year? Which is a total Fandom question, you know."

"That's definitely a Fandom question, yeah." Sam laughed. "No, Dean and I are from 1997. What about you?"

Buffy's eyes widened. "Me too!"
