Things to Do at the Beach, Galactica Point, Friday Morning, Class #2

As the students approached, they should see a number of boats, oars, and, of course, the bright orange PFDs.

"Good morning, everyone," Jarod said as he looked warily up at the sky, which was very cloudy. "Assuming the weather holds, today we'll be canoeing."

"First are the parts of the boat," Jarod said, as he pointed them out. "Next, there are several strokes," he said, demonstrating, "paddling a canoe should feel very different to you from paddling a kayak. First, you have to put one hand on the butt and the other on the shaft, and you should keep your hands in the same position, instead of twisting your wrists like you did last week."

"Finally, you choose your paddle by putting the butt on your foot. The height of the blade of the paddle should be between your eyes and your nose. So!" He smiled brightly, "go forth and paddle, but if there's thunder, be prepared to come back in."


[ooc: Assuming everyone shows up, we have an odd number of students in the class, so Jarod'll canoe with the last person to sign in--solo canoeing is a completely different activity and requires a lot more expertise.]

"Come on, Isabel. You said you'd do something with me. This is perfect."

Jack grabbed her hand and tugged her towards the paddles, passing her one while he held another up in front of him.

"If you dump us, I will beat with this paddle," Isabel threatened as she measured the paddle to check that it was the proper size. "Keep in mind, I've never done this before."

"I won't dump us, Izzy. Trust me. I'm very coordinated." Happy with the paddle he'd found, he pointed at a canoe. "Come on, let's get it in the water."

"I'm holding you to that. It might be hot but the water is still damn cold." Smiling happily she followed him to the canoe and started to tug it into the water. Shuddering a bit as it splashed her legs.

Jack picked up the other end and laughed at Izzy's expression. "Here, you get in first, and I'll hold it steady."

"Thank you. My toes appreciate it," she said as she climbed in and got settled in the front seat. "Take us to sea captain."

Jack very carefully climbed in, and grapsed his paddle.

One hand on the butt. One hand on the shaft. Snickering under his breath.

"Captain, huh? I like the sound of that." He dipped his paddle in the water and pushed them gently away from the shore.

"Just as long as I don't have to call you Captain Bligh, we'll do fine," Isabel chuckled as she started to move the paddle through the water. "So what have you been up to in the less then twenty-four hours it's been since I've seen you last?"

Molly spent some time trying to find the correct sized paddle and waited for someone to canoe with.

Jude managed to get his PFD on without tangling himself up and found a paddle without bonking himself in the head. He was totally getting better.

He wandered up to the girl he didn't know and smiled a bit sheepishly. "Um, hey, bra. Lookin' for a partner?"

"I've never canoed before," Molly said. "So, I'm not so sure about how to steer. Do you know how?"

Jude nodded. "Yeah, more or less. I've done a bit of canoein' at summer camp and goin' camping with my friends up in Algonquin."

"Hello, Pippi!" Archie calls as he selects a paddle. "What say you to a bit of a nautical teamup, or is that a bit unfair to our fellow students, do you think?"
