Things to Do at the Beach, Galactica Point, Friday Morning, Class #2

As the students approached, they should see a number of boats, oars, and, of course, the bright orange PFDs.

"Good morning, everyone," Jarod said as he looked warily up at the sky, which was very cloudy. "Assuming the weather holds, today we'll be canoeing."

"First are the parts of the boat," Jarod said, as he pointed them out. "Next, there are several strokes," he said, demonstrating, "paddling a canoe should feel very different to you from paddling a kayak. First, you have to put one hand on the butt and the other on the shaft, and you should keep your hands in the same position, instead of twisting your wrists like you did last week."

"Finally, you choose your paddle by putting the butt on your foot. The height of the blade of the paddle should be between your eyes and your nose. So!" He smiled brightly, "go forth and paddle, but if there's thunder, be prepared to come back in."

[ooc: Assuming everyone shows up, we have an odd number of students in the class, so Jarod'll canoe with the last person to sign in--solo canoeing is a completely different activity and requires a lot more expertise.]

Jude had already shed his shoes and socks and hitched up his shorts - because wet denim sucked - before carefully pushing the canoe into the water, getting to about knee deep before stopping. "Okay, bra, hold on. I don't wanna dump ya."

Molly held onto the sides of the canoe for balance. "Got it."

Kicking up a shining splash of water but with surprising agility, Jude swung up into the canoe, settling in the back without tipping them.

He chuckled. "Awesome. Did I splash ya?"

"A little," Molly said, "but if I was worried about getting wet, I wouldn't have taken this class." She grinned at him.

"True enough," Jude chuckled, picking up his paddle and dipping it into the water. "So ya never canoed before? Like, ever?"

Molly shook her head as she carefully paddled the way they'd been shown. "Nope. Lived in L.A. all my life and never canoed."

Jude chuckled. "So I'm guessin' if I break into 'Land of the Silver Birch' all I'm gonna get is weird looks?"

Molly gave him a weird look. "Uh, yeah." Then she grinned.

And now that he had mentioned it, it of course became immediately stuck in his head and he began paddling in time to the music inside his skull.

Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver . . .

"Could just be a Canadian thing, though."
