Wilderness Survival - Week 1| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto waited until the class finished marching into the clearing they'd been given *handwavey* directions to.

"First things first," she held up a large box. "At the start of each class you will take off your shoes and put them in this box. You will get them back at the end of class, if I believe that you have paid sufficient attention in class. Otherwise I get to keep them for the week. After you've done that I want you to introduce yourself to the class and say why you decided to take this workshop."

"Since this is the first class, I'd thought I'd start with something fairly simple. Fandom is filled with many unique and interesting animals, from the ducks and giant squid, to the dancing lemers and weetiny bunnies, to the minature giraffes and shy, retiring teal deer, to John Crichton. Some of these are harmless, others dangerous, still more tasty. Which is why, when lost in the wilderness, it's important to know what animals might be in your near vicinity. One of the best ways to do this is through tracking, the basics of which I will be teaching you today."

Callisto went on to give a very interesting and informative talk on tracking. It might even have drawn the attention of a few teal deer.

"Your assignment today is to split into pairs and identify which Fandom animal made the set of tracks I've assigned you.

"Good luck. You're going to need it."

Molly debated whether to take her socks off as well. On the one hand, very dirty socks. On the other, even colder toes. She finally decided to leave them on for now.

Sam saw Molly sitting by herself and took a deep breath. Surely he could do this without too much embarrassment. He just had to start by talking. "Hey Molly," he said, smiling.

"Callisto probably wants to toughen us up," Molly said. "Either that or torture us. One of the two." She grinned.

Sam laughed. "Oh, so she's one of those kinds of teachers. That's good, because I know I'm not getting my weekly recommended dose of torture here."

Molly shrugged. "Callisto is really nice, but she's from a different time. I wouldn't be surprised if she thinks we're all too soft really. The torture would just be an added bonus for her," Molly said with another grin.

"I guess I can understand that. And as long as we get our shoes back at the end of the class, there probably isn't a reason to complain."

Sam paused awkwardly for a second, just looking at Molly, before he reminded himself to breathe and spoke again. "Um, so I was just wondering...are you doing anything this weekend?" he asked.

Janet also stripped off her socks and stuffed them into her boots, because it really wasn't worth getting the socks dirty too. And she really wished she'd had time to get coffee before coming to class.

Cameron wasn't sulking when he wandered over (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/878451.html?thread=41864819#t41864819) to the other side of the clearing. He was totally cool and cheerful, yep.

Parker's hugging her new hiking boots. "You could have told me they'd be confiscated the second we got here!"

"You were going to go out into the wilderness in boots that hadn't been broken in?" asked Janet, eyeing the hiking boots. "They're awfully nice, though."

"I walked around in them last week," Parker protested. "Okay, maybe not hiking, but... " she sighed and surrendered them. "I thought they were nice. For outdoor shoes."

Janet didn't snicker, but her eyes were gleaming with amusement. "If you'd gone hiking in them, you'd have gotten blisters, and I'd have had to treat you." She looked down at her semi-nicely manicured feet. "Mind you, if we have to go hiking in the forest without boots, I'm in trouble too. My boots are all nice and broken in." They were ugly, clunky, and black, but they were comfortable. Yes, she'd stolen an old pair she'd kept stashed in the infirmary back at the SGC. So? It wasn't like her feet had shrunk since she'd been cloned.

"Fabulous." Parker grimaced, and folded her arms. "I hate the outdoors. And I'm beginning to wonder if it hates me."

"The outdoors doesn't hate you," said Janet. "It's not alive and sentient, after all. Why do you hate the outdoors so much, anyway?"

"Because it's uncomfortable and hell on my wardrobe," Parker said promptly. She shifted uneasily. "And things come at you with no warning!"

Alec got rid of his socks and waited around for Hamlet, kinda bemused by the class so far.

"Yep. I'm Alec," he said, grinning. Cute and friendly? Already his type. "Nice to meet you, Janet. You a big outdoorsy person?"

"Outdoorsy enough, if not experienced at this kind of situation," said Janet, grinning back. "I don't think camping trips were what Callisto had in mind when she planned this workshop. How about you? Are you very outdoorsy?"

"I've got some experience in this area," he said easily. "But I definitely appreciate the comforts of civilization a hell of a lot more."

"Hopefully experience won't make Cal go harder on us," said Janet, glancing warily at Callisto. "Who doesn't? Showers, coffee, modern medicine. Can't live without them."

He grinned again, glancing at Callisto as well - maybe to see if she was within earshot. "I think I might've gotten myself in the hotseat anyway," he said without apparent concern.
