Wilderness Survival - Week 1| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto waited until the class finished marching into the clearing they'd been given *handwavey* directions to.

"First things first," she held up a large box. "At the start of each class you will take off your shoes and put them in this box. You will get them back at the end of class, if I believe that you have paid sufficient attention in class. Otherwise I get to keep them for the week. After you've done that I want you to introduce yourself to the class and say why you decided to take this workshop."

"Since this is the first class, I'd thought I'd start with something fairly simple. Fandom is filled with many unique and interesting animals, from the ducks and giant squid, to the dancing lemers and weetiny bunnies, to the minature giraffes and shy, retiring teal deer, to John Crichton. Some of these are harmless, others dangerous, still more tasty. Which is why, when lost in the wilderness, it's important to know what animals might be in your near vicinity. One of the best ways to do this is through tracking, the basics of which I will be teaching you today."

Callisto went on to give a very interesting and informative talk on tracking. It might even have drawn the attention of a few teal deer.

"Your assignment today is to split into pairs and identify which Fandom animal made the set of tracks I've assigned you.

"Good luck. You're going to need it."

Pairs are:
1. Alec
Hamlet Dane Jr

2. Alphonse Elric
Janet Fraiser

3. Max Guevera
Molly Hayes

4. Joxer
Cameron Mitchell

5. M Parker
Buffy Summers

6. Aeryn Sun
Sam Winchester

"The outdoors doesn't hate you," said Janet. "It's not alive and sentient, after all. Why do you hate the outdoors so much, anyway?"

"Because it's uncomfortable and hell on my wardrobe," Parker said promptly. She shifted uneasily. "And things come at you with no warning!"

[and I go to work, so, SP]

"You're learning to react quickly to the unexpected, which will do good when you go up against all the Harvard business school clones," said Janet. "Which means your wardrobe is at least being sacrificed in a good cause." She glanced at Parker's outfit. "Would it kill you to dress practically instead of stylishly one day a week?"

OOC: Works for me. I'll be on most of the day, barring some Who watching later tonight.

"This is practical!" Parker said indignantly, pointing to the designer jeans, cashmere sweater, and leather jacket. "It's layered! I can get rid of stuff if it gets too hot." She grimaced, then looked wry. "I'm hoping to learn enough in here to mess up the business clones over 4th of July, actually. Take them on a snipe hunt then leave them somewhere."

"You'll never get rid of cashmere," said Janet. "Or designer anything. You know, I could get you a great deal on military surplus clothing." Janet didn't look too serious about that, though she was wearing jeans made of a thick, olive-colored denim and a comfortable-looking long-sleeved black t-shirt. "Oh, that's beautiful. Do you think you'll be all right with just one day a week? I wouldn't mind practicing after class some time, you know?"

Parker pouted, but had to concede Janet's point. "Ugh. Why must the American military dress so *badly*? It's not even the colors, it's the style and lack of same. Gah." She shuddered, then reconsidered. "That's actually a good idea." She sent a glare Callisto's way. "And might ensure I keep my *shoes* every week."

Janet did look sympathetic, at least. "I think the point is function, rather than form. You get used to it," said Janet. She looked around the clearing. "I don't expect to have access to technology one hundred percent of the time, and if I'm in--other places, and things go wrong, I'd prefer to know more about wilderness survival than I currently do. Also, I like my shoes, despite the fact that I have about fifty less pairs than you do."

Parker grimaced. "I'm all for function, but seriously. Decent material, even!" She nodded at Janet's comment on survival, and said, "Can you see Locker 327 grabbing us and dumping us somewhere without water? Because I'm not betting on the odds of getting through the rest of the time here without it happening again. So. Workshop." She squared her shoulders, then looked thoughtful. "And maybe bringing those sock-things with the rubber soles for next time."

"It's decent material for what it's meant to do," said Janet, who really and truly didn't care. Which was obvious in how she dressed on a daily basis, yes. "I can see Locker 327 dumping us in a lot of places. And at least I'm in it with you and a bunch of other people who'll take it seriously." She grinned and shook her head. "Bets on her noticing and making you take those off too will now be taken."

"Look at it this way," said Janet. "It's going to be hell, and she's going to be a tyrannical dictator, but at least we'll be learning something from the best, which means it'll be really worth something. She's good at this sort of thing."

"True." Parker's smile went fiendish. "Those suits in Blue Cove won't know what hit them." She cocked an eyebrow. "So, nature walks, or something, later this week, before the next workshop?"

"Too bad you can't capture a gremlin and release it in their midst," said Janet. "That's a good idea. We can explore off the beaten path in the Preserve, maybe. With shoes." She glanced over at Callisto again. "We're going to suffer."
