Baking Workshop 5/22, FH Home Ec Classroom, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they show up at the home ec classroom after handwave hearing some sort of announcement letting them know to meet here.

"I'm Piper in case some of you might not know," she says somewhat cheerfully, handing each student a syllabus.

She points out the plate of brownies on the counter in front of her. "I made these for you because that is what we will be baking today. Try one if you'd like. I'm told I make the best brownies ever." She smiles proudly. "We will not be making the kind I brought in, though. They have a secret ingredient and, if I told you what it is, I'd have to vanquish you and no one wants that."

Piper grins to let them know she isn't serious about the vanquishing. She hands each student a list of ingredients and instructions. "I'm not going to lecture you because this workshop is supposed to be fun. So we're gonna get started right away. These instructions are, hopefully, easy to follow. If any of you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask."

Sam facepalmed, which promptly coated most of her face and some of her hair with flour and cocoa. "No, there are no demons. I don't think. I mean, it's not like we're making snicker..." She remembered the syllabus. "Um, nevermind that second part. I just meant no demons."

"And, um, interesting writing."

Anders instantly crushed the egg he was holding, completely unmindful of the fact that yolk was running all over his shoes.

"What?"

"Anders, there's egg..." She reached over for a paper towel and handed it to him. "Your writing. On the radio last night? That's the writing about baseball you told me you were doing, right?"

Anders couldn't possibly have been any paler. "How the frak did -- on the radio last night? I didn't listen . . ."

"I don't know?" Sam noticed how pale he was. "Anders? Do you want to sit down or a glass of water or something?"

"I kind of want to crawl in a hole and hide," he mumbled. "How did it get on the radio?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh...it was read out loud?" She patted him awkwardly on the shoulder. "It was pretty decent, really. If that's your kind of thing."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Read out loud?" Anders groaned. "No way. I can't believe . . . aw, man. That was -- I don't even know why I'm into that stuff lately! It's totally something I could have lived without the whole school knowing. Mars is never gonna leave me alone about the boykissy thing now, is she?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Anders, if it isn't hurting anyone, who cares?" Sam shook her head, "and no, she's probably not."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
He sighed ruefully. "Great. I just feel bad for Cally, now. If she doesn't kill me, she's gonna be so embarrassed."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Did she know about it ahead of time?" Sam asked.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah? She's read some of it," Anders admitted.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Then why would she be embarrassed?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Because I worry that people will think I do this because she's not enough for me any more? Or . . . I don't know, she told me other people might think it was too weird." Anders shrugged. "Okay, she'll probably just tell me I deserved it or something, for going and putting it on the Internet."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Well...it's true that if you don't want people to see something, you shouldn't put it where it will be seen," Sam said, "but why is the other stuff true? Or why is it anyone else's business?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not." He shrugged again. "You can't stop people from talking though, I guess."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"No," she said carefully, "but people always talk, or they will until something better comes along. You can't control that, Anders."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, at least you haven't laughed in my face," Anders conceded with a weak chuckle. "That's something. Be surprised if nobody did, though. Not that they wouldn't have a right."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"So challenge them to write something better and post it on the internet for perfect strangers to read and critique. I bet they're not brave enough to do it."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, if I'd actually, you know, thought about it? I wouldn't have posted the stuff in the first place."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Why not?" Sam asked, then said, "I mean, other than the potential humiliation factor?"

Yeah, so she wasn't perfect with the consolation.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, there's the humiliation factor, and then there's . . . the humiliation factor." Anders grinned, still awkward but a bit less so now. "That and they're really not that good."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you want them to be better?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Anders shrugged, again, and completely misread the amounts of flour and sugar he was supposed to use as he dumped them into the bowl. "I just wanted to see if I could do it, that's all. And I think I can, but I don't know if it's good enough, or if I like it enough, to keep going."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sam didn't see anything unusual about the amounts Anders dumped in the bowl, so she didn't say anything. "Well, I guess that's up to you. But don't stop doing something you like doing just because other people think it's silly."
