Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Willow blinked at the name, then relaxed when she realized it wasn't her Xander. "Hi! I'm Willow!"

"Willow! Like the tree, cool. You're the second person I've met today who's named after a plant. The other being my roommate."

Oh, yeah. *That* was smooth.

"Your roommate's name is Plant?" Willow asked. Because coming from a world where she hung out with people named Buffy, Xander, Oz, and Spike meant she could point fingers.

"No, Briar. Which is odd 'cause I come from Briarwood. Well, I don't actually come from there so much as I moved there a few years ago and..." He broke off. "Wow, sorry. Didn't mean to babble at you."

He looked around for a nearby tree, just in case he ended up embarassing himself further and needed a quick escape route.

Willow smiled. "That's okay! I babble too. I'm a bit of a babbler. I come from a babbling people. Ha, case in point! So what brings you to Fandom?"

Okay, this one he had to think about. Briar... had seemed pretty easy-going about the idea of magic. But Briar wasn't from his world. He had no idea where Willow was from, so he decided not to go in to that.

"My teacher thought this place would be a 'unique experience'," he said, complete with airquotes. "And so she recommended it to my parents."

"I'm getting away from my old school," Willow said. She did her own air quotes. "'New experiences' and 'new people' who are not 'jerky boys'." She looked suddenly horrified. "Not - not that you're a jerky boy! I wasn't implying anything! Bad air quotes, bad!"

"S'all good, mate." Xander said with a grin. "Airquotes can get away from you sometimes, I understand. They're a tricky thing."

"At least they're not as wily as fire quotes," Willow said, grinning. "I tried using those once and whoo did I get burned."

"And see, I'd make a water quotes joke here but that might be stretching it out a bit too far, and we can't have that."

"They'd have to punish us, and then we'd be grounded," Willow said, with an even bigger grin. Then she looked worried. "'cause... earth. Ground. I was going for a pun there, possibly so hard that I sprained something."

"No, I got it, it was a funny." Xander grinned.

Of course, this was a guy whose battle cry is "strong as a tree!", so...

Willow beamed back at him. "I'm not sure how you'd make earth quotes though. Maybe by stomping your feet? Or waiting for the earth quote stork to bring them and leave them in the cabbage patch."

"Stomping your feet, huh?" Xander said, stomping his feet as if to try it out.

And... that'd be when the huge green vines shot out in front of him.

"Oh, crap! Crap! Stop!" He flailed, and the vines kind of... wilted and disappeared.

Willow scrambled to her feet. "You made plants!"

"Yeah that... happens sometimes. It's a thing."

Willow's face lit up.

Not literally.

"Can you do other kinds of magic?"

"I know a few spells," Xander admitted. "Mostly, you know, making myself or other stuff float. And the one for summoning a swarm of bees, which isn't very useful unless you have a pollination emergency, really."

He wasn't going to mention the incident with the cardboard cutout. That was just embarassing.

"I did a swarm of li - " Willow stopped herself. "Um. I would like to. Do a swarm of light someday. If I get control of my spells. Which I don't have yet. Because that's naughty."

"Have you tried doing any heroic deeds lately?" Xander suggested.

"I've stopped a few apocalypses," Willow said. "Not on my own, but I was of clearly significant help. That count?"

"I'd say so, yeah." Xander nodded. "But, my mentor, Udonna, she said heroic deeds are the way to go, as far as getting control of spells."

"Really?" Willow's smile got even brighter. "That's great! I can do heroic. I am all about heroic. I know some might say I'm a little sidekicky but I've never felt that about myself and they say self-esteem is for everybody. Do you think you could teach me?"

"I don't know," Xander admitted. "It's just sort of... come naturally so far?"

"So you don't resaarch in books or online or anything?" Willow asked.
