Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Willow scrambled to her feet. "You made plants!"

"Yeah that... happens sometimes. It's a thing."

Willow's face lit up.

Not literally.

"Can you do other kinds of magic?"

"I know a few spells," Xander admitted. "Mostly, you know, making myself or other stuff float. And the one for summoning a swarm of bees, which isn't very useful unless you have a pollination emergency, really."

He wasn't going to mention the incident with the cardboard cutout. That was just embarassing.

"I did a swarm of li - " Willow stopped herself. "Um. I would like to. Do a swarm of light someday. If I get control of my spells. Which I don't have yet. Because that's naughty."

"Have you tried doing any heroic deeds lately?" Xander suggested.

"I've stopped a few apocalypses," Willow said. "Not on my own, but I was of clearly significant help. That count?"

"I'd say so, yeah." Xander nodded. "But, my mentor, Udonna, she said heroic deeds are the way to go, as far as getting control of spells."

"Really?" Willow's smile got even brighter. "That's great! I can do heroic. I am all about heroic. I know some might say I'm a little sidekicky but I've never felt that about myself and they say self-esteem is for everybody. Do you think you could teach me?"

"I don't know," Xander admitted. "It's just sort of... come naturally so far?"

"So you don't resaarch in books or online or anything?" Willow asked.

"I have *a* spellbook?"

"Can I see it sometime?" Willow asked. She blushed. "Um - in the totally innocent, two people sharing an interest in magic kind of way. Not - not 'see your spellbook' like some kind of euphamism. Not - not that girls wouldn't find you euphamismy. Or guys, if that's your thing."

"Uh," Xander tried to remember if Udonna had said anything about not letting people see the spellbook. He definitely remembered a rule about not letting people know he was a Ranger, but *he* wasn't a Ranger anymore, so surely this was different. "I'd have to ask Udonna, actually. She has all these weird rules. Mostly to prevent my friends and I from turning ourselves into sheep and things like that."

"Pfft," Willow waved that off. "What are the odds of that happening?"

Xander thought about the time Clare had done just that. And the time she'd turned her hair into whipped cream. And the time she'd *lost* all her hair.

"You'd be surprised."

"But mistakes like that just mean we'll learn and not repeat them," Willow pointed out. "Guaranteed no sheepiness."
