Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Sudden is not fun. I've had some experience with that myself," she said with a wry smile. "I hope you enjoy yourself while you're here though. Even if you'll be hard pressed to find a good cup of tea," she said thinking of all of Xander's stories about Giles. "Most everyone here lives on coffee."

"I hope I do as well," Cedric agrees. "Coffee? No food?" Cedric asks wryly.

"Baked goods, lots and lots of baked good," Isabel laughed. "Jeff, God of Biscuits is the bakery down in town. There's always stuff from there around. Plus there are kitchens in the common rooms. So some people will cook for everyone once in a while."

"I confess to not being a very good cook at all," Cedric tells her. "Baked goods? Sweet, by any chance?"

"Very sweet," Isabel nodded. "Cookies, brownies, doughnuts, you name, they have it. They probably catered in the desserts for this."

"Now that is something that's familiar," Cedric grins. "Good to hear that, if anything, I have sweets to help me adjust."

"Comfort food is definitely good," she smiled. "What else would help with the adjustment? What do you like to do?"

He almost says quidditch but stops himself at the last minute. "Time, most likely. You said you had experience in sudden changes? It took you awhile to feel comfortable, didn't it?"

"Well time is one thing we've got plenty of. A whole summer, even. Hopefully I can help you make the best of it," she smiled before growing more serious. "It takes time, but enventually everything that's new become more normal, what you expect. Before you know it, you'll be dodging tree thrown acorns with the rest of us without raising an eyebrow."

"You'd be willing to help me?" Cedric's look of relief is obvious. "Thank you. I mean, I don't mean to act helpless but it would be nice to have help with someone who was in a similar situation."

"Of course," she said. "I came here in January, expecting a nice, normal boarding school. Fandom is nice, but normal is not the right word. Interesting might be a better choice. Unique even. Probably the best piece of advice I can give you is to keep an open mind no matter what you see or hear." She grinned, "I'd say more but I wouldn't want to send you running back to England."

"I'll have to tell you about where I came from sometime," he says quietly. "Like this place, it wasn't your typical school."

"If it even half as interesting as this place, I'd love to hear about it," she said with a smile. "I've never been to England. I'd love to go one day."

"It's a nice place," he says. "I miss it. And I sound like I'm whining. Sorry about that."

"No, not at all. Hell, I even miss Roswell sometimes. Well, at least I miss my folks, and occasionally my brother."

"Roswell?" Cedric tilts his head, trying to remember if he's heard of that location before. "Have you seen your family since arriving here?"

"Roswell," Isabel nodded. "It's a small town out in New Mexico that's known because way back in 1947 a weather balloon crashed there. Or at least that's what the government wants you to believe. The alien conspiracy folks tell another story."

"I had to go home back in March," she said quietly, still unable to believe that much time had passed. "I saw them then."

"Aliens? The government covered up aliens landing in your hometown?" He frowns and rubs the back of his neck.

Nodding again, Cedric bows his head. "I didn't get to see my father before I left. I hate that."

Easy topic first. "That was sudden. Maybe you can email him? Or call?"

And then just to make things interesting, "They did. They do. Still. Um..." Isabel looked down, Greg had seemed okay with finding out the truth but she wasn't sure how Cedric would take it. Still, better he hear the truth from her instead of someone else. "I'm one of them."

"Maybe." He shrugs and tries not to think about that particular topic for awhile. "You're an alien? That was quite the thing to admit to someone you barely know. Are you all right?"

"I am. It's just still kind of weird for me to admit that to people. Before I came here it was always this big life or death secret." Isabel shrugged, "The that Skeeter woman announced it on the radio and the whole school found out." Shaking her head she continued, "To this day I have no clue how she found out. But I have to admit, she did do me a favor in a way. It's nice to be able to be me and not worry about hiding anything."

"Rita Skeeter was involved?" Cedric frowns severely and shakes his head. "I know her and I know how she can be. I'm terribly sorry did she that to you."

"Thanks, but the laugh is on her, because it did work out better for me in the end. She, on the other hand," Isabel said with a chuckle, "Has been reduced to singing badly off-key during the nightly radio broadcast. While drunk no less. I think some of my classmates drove her around the bend."

"I've arrived late, haven't I?" He laughs quietly, letting some of the tension go. "She was a pest at my old school. Very irritating. I'm glad to here it's worked out well for you, Isabel. Rita Skeeter shouldn't make anyone feel badly about themselves."

"I could get you copies of some of the podcasts if you'd like. If you've had a history with her, I'm sure you would enjoy them," she offered and then shrugged. "It wasn't a matter of feeling bad. I was more worried about the government finding out. They don't like knowing that their cover-up isn't perfect. But Fandom is a special place, and it seems to be keeping me and the others safe."
