Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"Roswell," Isabel nodded. "It's a small town out in New Mexico that's known because way back in 1947 a weather balloon crashed there. Or at least that's what the government wants you to believe. The alien conspiracy folks tell another story."

"I had to go home back in March," she said quietly, still unable to believe that much time had passed. "I saw them then."

"Aliens? The government covered up aliens landing in your hometown?" He frowns and rubs the back of his neck.

Nodding again, Cedric bows his head. "I didn't get to see my father before I left. I hate that."

Easy topic first. "That was sudden. Maybe you can email him? Or call?"

And then just to make things interesting, "They did. They do. Still. Um..." Isabel looked down, Greg had seemed okay with finding out the truth but she wasn't sure how Cedric would take it. Still, better he hear the truth from her instead of someone else. "I'm one of them."

"Maybe." He shrugs and tries not to think about that particular topic for awhile. "You're an alien? That was quite the thing to admit to someone you barely know. Are you all right?"

"I am. It's just still kind of weird for me to admit that to people. Before I came here it was always this big life or death secret." Isabel shrugged, "The that Skeeter woman announced it on the radio and the whole school found out." Shaking her head she continued, "To this day I have no clue how she found out. But I have to admit, she did do me a favor in a way. It's nice to be able to be me and not worry about hiding anything."

"Rita Skeeter was involved?" Cedric frowns severely and shakes his head. "I know her and I know how she can be. I'm terribly sorry did she that to you."

"Thanks, but the laugh is on her, because it did work out better for me in the end. She, on the other hand," Isabel said with a chuckle, "Has been reduced to singing badly off-key during the nightly radio broadcast. While drunk no less. I think some of my classmates drove her around the bend."

"I've arrived late, haven't I?" He laughs quietly, letting some of the tension go. "She was a pest at my old school. Very irritating. I'm glad to here it's worked out well for you, Isabel. Rita Skeeter shouldn't make anyone feel badly about themselves."

"I could get you copies of some of the podcasts if you'd like. If you've had a history with her, I'm sure you would enjoy them," she offered and then shrugged. "It wasn't a matter of feeling bad. I was more worried about the government finding out. They don't like knowing that their cover-up isn't perfect. But Fandom is a special place, and it seems to be keeping me and the others safe."

"I'm glad to hear that." Feeling a bit sheepish about his sudden anger, he tries to laugh it off. "And copies would be good. I'd love to hear what she's been like here since I've missed it."

Hearing her story makes him realize they're a lot more similar than he first thought. "I understand where you're coming from. I'm from a similar situation."

"Do you have a laptop? Because I can burn them onto a CD for you. Otherwise just wander down the hall and I'll play them on mine."

Isabel studied Cedric for a moment, "You do? Who'd be looking to keep things covered up in England?"

"Laptop, no I don't," Cedric replies. "I've got a broom and some clothing. I didn't get much time to pack."

"As for England," he says quietly, "it's complicated to say the least."

"You'll just have to stop by then. Which would not be a problem at all. Company is always welcome, otherwise I'll get lonely." she said as her smile dimmed for a brief second.

"And I get complicated," Isabel sighed. "But if you don't want to talk about it here," she gestured at the crowds milling around. "It can wait."

"I'll stop by, I promise." He nods firmly. "Right down the hall and with the offer of Rita Skeeter embarrassing herself? I can't resist."

"It's best not talked about around too many people. It's not bad, I promise, but it's something...complicated."

"And if you time it right, sometimes there'll even be sweets."

Isabel nodded, "That's fine. There's plenty of time."

"A very enticing offer. How can I resist?" Cedric smiles, nodding again. "Thank you. On both accounts."

"You can't," Isabel said as she pushed back her hair and smiled. "But now I'd better go. It's been nice talking with you Cedric. I'll see you later."

"I hope so." He smiles at her as she walks away.
