Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Xander, a little befuddled by his conversation with Dawn, though not unhappily so, made a beeline for, well. Free food, yo. Plus Isabel was over here somewhere, and it'd be nice to have a stable vantage point to get a look at some of the faces he'd be seeing over the summer.

Rory waved, glad to see someone she recognized. "All recovered from graduation?"

"I'm not sure my hair will ever be un-flat again, but other than that, I'm good." Xander smiled, then tilted his head. "Anakin too, huh? Is he...staying for the summer?"

He didn't want to say anything people might make assumptions about, but it did seem polite to let Rory know he knew, and that didn't seem too suspicious; the two of them were ~~OMGJUST~~friends, after all.

"Hopefully," Rory said, her smile fading a little. "He went home this morning to appeal to the people in charge. They don't want him to stay." She shrugged.

"That's gotta suck. For him, I mean. Not you. Because Marty's on the good crack and was not sharing."

"Well, he's my friend and we're close so yeah, sucks for me too. But not as much as him, obviously." Rory shook her head. "I have no idea where Marty came up with that. Seriously."

Xander tilted his head the other way. "Yeah. Because secret relationships? Around here? You'd have to be paying attention to who heard or saw what, like... 24/7. You'd need a spreadsheet or something."

Rory frowned. "What are you getting at?" she asked, lowering her voice a little.

Xander lowered his own, though not much, because there's no better way to attract attention than to try to be all super-subtle-like, at least if you're Xander Harris. Some lessons learned from covering for a ~~Vampire Slayer~~ Class Protector die a damn hard death.

"Well, it'd kinda suck. I mean, you couldn't ever risk getting drunkenated, because you might say the wrong thing in front of the wrong person and not even remember the next day. And then, like, months later something might remind them and it'd all click into place."

Rory sighed. "I'll add you to the list. Don't say anything to anyone who's not me, him, Bridge, Angel, Cal, Parker, Angela, Zero, Peter, John, or...well, my mom, not that you talk to her a lot. It's a secret for a reason, et cetera."

Xander snickered. "Why am I not shocked that Parker knows."

Then, expression turning serious, he nodded. "Yeah, I won't. I'm actually pretty good at keeping secrets when I know it's supposed to be one."

"Ironically? Parker's one of the ones who I told, rather than one who guessed," Rory replied, rolling her eyes. "And thank you. I'll let him know you know when he gets back. He could get in really big trouble, blah blah - you probably surmised as much, since it's secret and all."

"Yeah. Been there, with that; it's kind of an open secret now, back home, but Buffy being a Vampire Slayer was the Tale You Do Not Tell for most of sophomore and junior year."

Z wandered by on a quest for soda.

Why yes, that was an SPD cadet's uniform she was wearing.

Xander cocked his head. "Whoa. Hello, new person who dresses in a surprisingly familiar manner. How's the weather fifteen years in the future? "

Z glanced down at her uniform, then remembered what Cruger had said about...some other cadet. "You know Cadet Carter?" She did some mental math, 1997 plus 15... "Um, 2012 was kind of stormy."

Xander blinked at her. "I'm... not sure where to start on that one. I know Cadet Carson, but he's not from 2012."

"Carson, yes, that's what the blue guy said! Do you know him? And you're the one that asked about 2012, not me."

The blinking wasn't exactly decreasing. "I... kind of date him. He'll probably be happy to hear there's somebody else from SPD here. Granted he's pretty much happy to hear the sun rose again this morning and air is still made of oxygen."

Xander scratched his head. "Except...I didn't say 2012, I said fifteen years in the future. Which ok, 2012 is fifteen years in my future, but.. no, that doesn't work out either. Fifteen years in my future would be 2015."

"Oh, great. An optimist."

Z frowned. "But, I thought--Dean said it was 1997."

"Bridge? I dunno if he's exactly an optimist so much as he's just ... easily pleased." Xander grinned. "Clearly, since he's dating me."

Then the second bit caught up with him, and the blinky returned. "Dean Zordon told you it was 1997? Dude, now the administration are pranking the newbies? Not cool."

"So it's not 1997, it's 2000," she said, finishing the mental math. "Got it--Zordon? Zordon's here??"

"No, it's 2006 here. Um, now. And yeah, Zordon's our Dean of Students. Head in a tube guy?"

Z's brain officially hurts. "2006, huh? No, no, no, Zordon's dead. He died destroying evil. Even I know that."

"Huh." Xander shrugged. "Maybe he's from when he was alive before he was dead? Or maybe he died but now he's undeadinated; that happens a lot in Fandom."
