Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"Right. California, of course I've heard of that. I mean, who hasn't. California, land of the Californs." Joxer rubs his hands a little. "You got a king, right? Or is it a emporer?"

"Actually there was an emporer years ago who lived in San Francisco I think," Willow said. "But it's just a governor now. That and the occasional snak - uh, I mean mayor. Nice, Cub Scout loving mayor."

"Cub scouts?" Joxer is kinda struggling here. "Is that some sort of Barbarian tribe?"

"Depends on the troop leader," Willow said. "What about you? Where are you from?"

"I'm from Greece? It's this little place over that aways," he gestures vaguely. "At least, I think it's that way. I'm not entirely sure where I am."

"That way," Willow said, pointing. "And wow. You've come far! What brings you to Fandom?"

"My dad sent me," Joxer says. "I guess he thought I might do better out here, or something. It's the first time I've, erm, been to school, actually. There's not a whole lot of warrior academies that would accept me."

"You're a warrior?" Willow asked. "Is that like a Slayer?"

"Oh, I gues I hadn't introduced myself. I'm Joxer, Joxer the Mighty. I'm on my way to being the most infamous warlord in the world." Joxer smiles smugly.

"You mean famous, right?" Willow said, hopefully. "Infamous would be bad."

"Well, my dad tells me infamy is better than fame," Joxer says, lying just a little. Since his Dad never really told Joxer anything, more like yelled and lectured. "Harder for people to forget you, or something."

"Go for fame," Willow said. "People will totally ~~remember your name~~ put you in the history books for that. And - and I'm Willow by the way. Not a warrior. Just a student. A perfectly average, totally unremarkable student."

"Nice name," Joxer says. "Nice, erm, everything." He's trying not to blush, really. "I'll keep that fame thing in mind."

Willow blushed. "Oh, I'm not a nice everything. Buffy was a nice everything. Except for the book smarty stuff. That I'm all over. Which is probably why the line of guys outside my door doesn't so much exist outside the realm of fantasy."

Joxer really, really wants to say 'Would you like me to form one?'

What he does say, however, is "I like fantasies."

"I used to have some about the male side-kicks on Bitterwoman," Willow said. "But sadly those never came true."

"I've thought about the sidekick act myself," Joxer says. "Erm, not being one, but having them. You, um, ever thought about being a sidekick?"

"I was a Scoobie," Willow said, proudly. "It's sort of like being a sidekick but with donuts."

Joxer laughed, but stopped suddenly.

"Erm, what's a donut?" he asked.

"Yummy desserty thing made of, um, well dough," Willow said, holding her hands out to approximate a round shape. "About yay big. Sweet, and sometimes filled with jelly. Though we don't eat those because it makes Giles go all cranky."

"That does sound yummy," Joxer said. "Sounds like you had a lot of friends back where you came from. That make it kinda hard to be here?"

"It's... hard. Ish," Willow said. She fiddled with the hem of her skirt. "They're still back in my old town and all they know is that I transferred to another school. Buffy thinks I'm even - " She stopped herself from saying "In the same class." "Um. My friend doesn't know how much my life's changed in the past few weeks. You know, with coming here."

Joxer frowned a bit. "Yeah, I know what you mean. About the changes, at least. I think they won't really miss me back home. Except maybe my mom."

Willow reached over to try to pat him on the arm. "I know what that's like. Heck, I bet my mom's forgotten I've gone away. She's so busy with all her conferences. Not like she ever sees me at home anyway."

Joxer put on his brave face and smiled a little.

"Thanks. You're really nice, you know what?"
