Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Don't mind at all," Willow said. She began peeling the banana, suspecting Joxer might not know he had to do that. "There's brownies. Fruit can always be supplemented with chocolate. Do you know chocolate?"

"Of course I do," Joxer said, waving his hand. "What do you take me for, huh? I'm the son of warlord and a warlord's wife, of course I know what... whatever you said is."

Willow grinned. "Wait right here. Watch Amy for me. I'll snag us some brownies."

Joxer nodded, and looked at the rat cage. "Amy, huh?" He tapped a finger against the side of the cage. "I bet she treats you really nicely. Probably the best fed pet rat in the whole village."

Willow got a couple of brownies from the snack table and came back with them. "Here you go. Chocolatey goodness the likes of which would even make Xander happy."

"Goodness?" Joxer took one of the brownies and bit into it. "Oh wow. Oh... wow."

"Thanks," Joxer said. "I guess I got a lot of stuff to learn about and get used to, here." He smiled and scratched his forehead. "I'm starting to feel a little behind in the times."

"How come you don't know about any of this?" Willow asked. "If - if you don't mind my asking."

"Okay, I'm pretty sure I've never even heard of this continent before," Joxer said. "So I'm guessing, as ridiculous as it sounds, that the gods might've sent me travelling through time."

"Oo! Maybe you're from another dimension!" Willow said. "Stuff like that happens all the time back home. Have you ever met somebody who looks like you but is a vampire?"

Willow swallowed some of her banana. She smiled nervously. "Um - nope. Not me either. Silly idea, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess so," Joxer said, fidgeting a little. He took a bite of the brownie again and chewed it thoroughly. "So, what're you here to study for, if you're just an average student, huh?"

"Oh, anything I can get my hands on," Willow said. "I'm really looking forward to learning whatever they have to offer. And tests! There's so many tests that I know I can do better on! Um... than I did with similar subjects at my old school, I mean."

"Tests?" It was Joxer's turn to swallow a bit of banana and smile nervously. "They're gonna test me? Like, swordfights to the death sort of tests?"

"No!" Willow assured him. "Tests like in math and science and history. Multiple choice, true/false, maybe even some essays!" She seemed far too happy about this.

Joxer bit his lower lip. "I think I might prefer the swordfighting."

"Oh," Willow's face fell. "Well, maybe they have that here too?"

"It's just I've never really done good in math and history and stuff. I can barely write my own name," Joxer said.

"That's awful," Willow said, sympathetically. "Have you thought about using a tutor?"

"My Dad never put much into that sort of thing," Joxer said. "So I didn't really--" Hey, the lightbulb finally went off. "Hey, I don't suppose you know someone who could help me, do you?"

"I might know somebody who's not afraid of a little book learning and who has done some tutoring before," Willow said. "Okay, granted, for a jock back home who turned out to be a big jerk and only because Snyder made me, but warriors are like sports guys, right? And no Snyder means it's more fun." She looked worried. "There's nobody here named Snyder is there?"

Joxer shrugged. "I only got here today, so I don't know if there's anyone named Snyder. But I do know that I'm not going to turn out to be a big jerk. At least, I hope not."
