Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

There's free food so Cameron heads out to grab some and watches the new students head in. Some of them actually look familiar, but that doesn't mean anything.

Greg waved at the guy, because he was bored and the dude seemed friendly enough.

Random waving. Cameron was dork enough to wave back. "Yo! New student? I'm Cameron Mitchell."

"Hi! Greg Sanders," he replied, pointing to himself. "And yeah, new. Does it show that much?"

Cameron grinned. "A bit, but it's more the setting and the whole 'I've never seen your face before' thing," he assured Greg. "You'll get used to the school. Sort of."

"Okay, yeah, starting to get that a lot," he said, frowning. "Do all the old kids have some kind of conspiracy to freak us out about the school?" He glanced at the building in question. "Doesn't look so scary."

"That sounds like something you should do to the newbies, but in this case telling the truth is freaky enough," Cameron said and couldn't help but look at the school too. "The building itself isn't scary - not counting the special collection in the library or locker 327 - and the gremlins been gone for a while now. Stuff just tends to happen around here."

"Stuff happens everywhere, dude," Greg said. "This girl - I think her name was Elizabeth? Dark hair, really pretty? - was telling me that there's some kind of gremlin thing." He rolled his eyes. "Riiiight."

"Liz? Yeah, she's right. Graduation yesterday had this huge gremlin balloon which came to life," Cameron shrugged. "I know it sounds weird, but you'll understand soon enough."

Greg glanced around and leaned in conspiratorially. "Do they put LSD in the water or something? It'd be easy enough to find out with a few tests."

"No," Cameron said slowly. "Some of the food has weird effects, but it's usually along the singing or making yourself a fool kind. Which admittedly could be drugs, but I'm pretty sure the gremlin was real."

"LSD causes hallucinations that can seem very real," he noted seriously.

"Dude, we had zombies here at the beginning of the year. The stench was around for a week after, I don't think hallucinations are supposed to linger that long," Cameron argued and picked up a cinnamon scone.

"Deceased bodies remain immobile after death because rigor motris sets in," Greg said patiently. "Are you sure this wasn't, like, a movie?"

"I had nail scratches on my arm for days. I'm pretty sure," Cameron said seriously.

"Maybe it was like, girls with face cream stuff on? My sister has this green masky stuff she puts on and it's terrifying."

Cameron laughed as he imagined the female half of the island running around playing zombies with face cream on. "Nice try, but no. You don't have to believe me, man. You'll find out for yourself soon enough. My money is on sand monsters or jello dragons for the next invasion."

"Jello dragons as in dragons made of jello, or ones that eat it or inhabit it?" Greg asked curiously.

"I was kinda hoping for the kind made of jello so once we kill them, we could have jello wrestling," he took a large bite from his scone.

"Ooh."

Greg? In a very happy place, mentally.

Cameron nodded and got a faraway look as he went to the same happy place.

"I assume you mean girls, right?" Greg asked. "'Cause I'd jello wrestle another dude if it meant the ladies would compete, but that's it."

"What?" Cameron tried not to flail. "Of course girls, yo."

"Not that there's anything wrong with liking guys. I just don't," he added, nodding.

"Same here," Cameron nodded back, understanding completely. "Girls are way too nice." He waved a hand about because this school did really confirm that.
