Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Shawn grabbed food, everything he could find, and found himself an empty table.

He pulled the information packet out of his bag again and looked around at all the other people, this wasn't quite how he'd expected it to be.

Relieved that there was at least another male, Peter sat down at the table.

"Do tell me you're new as well? And were you expecting any of this?" His gesture encompassed the lawns, the school, the milling students. Offering his hand, he said "I'm Peter Pevensie."

Shawn extended a hand to Peter and nodded. "Yep, I'm new too. I'm Shawn."

"This is..." he shrugged, "it's been a long time since I've been to summer camp, but yeah, different seems to fit it about right."

"I'm glad it's not just my lack of summer camp experience that makes me think this is odd then. They didn't run them much during the war." Peter shrugs. "What brings you here?"

"Oh, uh, my parents just wanted me out the way for the summer." Yeah, that would do as a story. It was partly true after all. "and you?"

Berating himself for not thinking of a coherent reason sooner - coherent meaning no overlord lions, Peter shrugged, "My-err-guardian suggested it. He thought I should meet new people, gain new experiences. And I don't argue with him so here I am."

He looked around at the milling people once more. "There do seem to be a preponderance of pretty ladies here. What do you think going to school with them will be like?"

"You've never been to school with girls before?" Shawn looked surprised, but then again the guy was British. Who knew how the education system worked.

"Well, from personal experience, going to school with pretty ladies, is no bad thing.. uh, where were you before this?"

"It's a normal thing here? For girls and boys to attend schools together? I didn't realise that. Very well, new experiences, here I come. But it's not a bit strange?"

Peter tried to figure out how to answer the second question. "It's a bit complicated, but then..." He gestured at the lawn teaming with people of all sorts. "That's how everything here seems to be. I was at Cheltenham College before the war - in Gloucestershire, in Britain. But then classes were suspended due to the Blitz so my sisters, brother, and I were sent to a family friend and have lived at a place called Cair Paravel ever since." There we go, mostly the truth, but leaving out all that complicated High King stuff. "What about you?"

"Yeah, perfectly normal." He shrugged, "I've been going to school with girls since I was five."

Shawn could do complecated, he couldn't exactly claim to be normal himself. "Uh, which war are we talking here? He didn't remember there being any Blitzes in England lately, then again, maybe he'd just missed the news while he'd been away.

Peter looked at Shawn curiously. He didn't look like he was out of touch. "The second world war? With Germany? You know, Hitler and the invasion of Poland, the fall of France..."

Shawn almost snorted the sip of coke he'd taken out of his nose. "Second world war?" He thought for a moment that perhaps he was another of the 4400, it would fit. He couldn't be, right? He said he'd come from England...

"Uh, are you sure you mean that war? You seem, really... young, to have been," he trailed off, not really sure where he should go with that comment to make it tactful. "That was a long time ago."

Peter froze. "Was it? I...err...it's only been four years or so since I was in England. What year is it here?" He mentally flailed as he damned Aslan for not warning him about this.

"It's 2006," Shawn supplied. "Are you sure you haven't been away longer than four years?"

This was sounding very familiar. Skipping large chunks of time was something he had experience in. Not that he intended to announce that right at the moment.

Peter raised an eyebrow then composed himself with the will of a High King.

"So it seems, so it seems. Well, hmm. So, d'you mind telling me who won that war? I do promise I'm neither insane nor an idiot. I just...apparently have been out of touch."

Shawn tried to pull out his elementary school history classes. No easy feat, he'd never really been big on history as a subject. "You did, you might want to check the details in a book or something though." He frowned, "what year were you expecting it to be?"

Peter sighed with relief to hear that his country - well, the country of his birth as Narnia was, in all other senses, his country now - was still intact.

"To be honest, I wasn't quite sure. Um, time is measured a bit differently where I've been for the past few years." Peter grinned. "You're thinking me absolutely batty right now, aren't you?"

Shawn smiled hesitantly, "uh, yeah. A little, but don't worry, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt for now." He keeps the fact he's had a similar experience to himself, the whole thing is all too familiar.

He shrugs, "at least you don't seem outwardly crazy, and I figure those are the ones to watch out for."

Peter laughed and bowed slightly in acknowledgement. "I greatly appreciate that! I've certainly heard that outwardly crazy are the strangest. So far I've heard of a psychotic vampire and her squid pet...which is the top of the the crazy list for me. You hear anything else that's nuts?"

"I.... well I hadn't heard either of those..." Shawn is starting to look like maybe he thinks Peter is one of the crazy ones, because while he knows that time travel is real, he's less sure about vampires. That just sounds a little too out there.

"You look exactly the same way I felt when I was told that. But a good lady named Janet who standing over there," he gestured to her, "told me that, and I'm almost certain she's completely sane!" He paused for a moment. "Unless she's pulling the leg of a new kid..."

"It may be a bit of new-guy hazing," Shawn suggested. "It sounds just a little too bizarre to be true." He glanced over at the apparent supplier of this news. "She doesn't look much like the type who would be making up stuff like that," he agreed.

"Let's just go with that for now...It's really better than the alternative." Peter made a face.
