Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Z stood nervously by the table, a cup of punch in one hand, a cookie in the other--free food!--and a foot hooked into the straps of her duffel bag to deter potential thieves. She knows the score.

She can still be heard muttering under her breath, "Don't replicate. Don't replicate."

Oh yeah, Nadia recognized that look. It was probably identical to the one she wore her first day. "Don't worry," she told the girl. "There are actually surprisingly few people around here who might make off with your bag."

"I don't even know what's in it," Z confessed. "They gave me this stuff before I left and I felt kind of stupid looking at it with Officer Blake on the transport...I mean, hi. I'm Z Delgado." She offered one hand to shake.

Nadia smiled. Oh yeah, she definitely knew that look. "Nadia Santos. Same thing happened to me, last year, only I had a backpack full of random stuff an officer had given me. I'll have to take you shopping."

"You're kidding. Oh, no, I can't, I--I don't have. Um. Money." Well, Cruger had said he would give her a stipend.

Nadia's smile widened. "Well, if we head over at the right time, there are ways around that problem. Or we can see about getting some money from my boss, he's pretty cool about that stuff."

Nadia tilted her head. "Wow, did you come to the wrong school." She smiled. "I'm kidding. It's entirely up to you, but if you decide you want to get some stuff that you got to pick out, let me know. It'd be fun."

"I'll keep that in mind, thanks. I probably will need some more stuff, but I have to see what they gave me first, and how much money I can talk the big blue guy into."

Nadia blinked. "You're getting money from Professor Tick?"

"Professor Tick. Or Professor The Tick. Or something. I've never actually had him for a class, but he's the big blue guy around here."

"I guess so." Nadia shrugged. "You get used to that sort of thing after awhile, though."

"Is he a Sirian? Only I thought they were all dead except for Cruger."

"I don't know what a Sirian is, but I don't think so. He's just a big guy in a blue tick outfit. With a purple dragon."

Because she might as well get all the girl's confusion over with now.

Nadia nodded. "Unfortunately, yes. Best advice you can get for this school is not to bother expecting the unexpected, because then it'll come up with something even more unexpected."

"Oh," Z said kind of weakly. "I guess it's good training, then."

"It is, I guess." Nadia tilted her head. "If you don't mind my asking, training for what? Or just for life in general?"

"I'm going to be a Power Ranger. They're like law enforcement officers? But color-coded, and sometimes they rampage through downtown in really big robots."

Nadia blinked. "Like, giant frogs and stuff? Those kinds of giant robots?" She smiled, remembering the dancing frog from when Marty was still twitching over prom. "Very cool."

"I dunno. Maybe? The ones I've seen were like...helicopters and vans and things. Only big."
