"All right," Zero said with a sigh. She pulled out a form and slapped it down on the desk with a black pen. "Fill this out and I'll rush process it while you wander around and hopefully don't get eaten or something. C'mon, I'll unlock SC for you."
Xander filled the application out quickly, blinking over a few of the questions -- No, I've...never done that with a book, and really never thought anybody would want to... -- and left it on the desk to follow Zero.
Zero led Xander to the door to Special Collections and presented him with a pair of dragon-hide gloves. "Wear these at all times, and good luck. We'll come in after you if you're not out by the end of the day. Maybe."
"Dude. Ette. You do not need to tell me twice." Xander slid the gloves on and peered nervously at the doorway, just in case there were dragons or... huh, now where did that quick mental flash of a bear in a hat come from? "Not taking a step off the straight and narrow in there, trust me."
......Forty-five minutes later, Xander emerged from that same doorway, a notebook in hand and a rather stunned look on his face. Not 'I ended up two libraries away with somebody throwing office supplies at me' stunned. Just the information overload kind.
"Well oh...kay, then," he said, blinking and looking back over his shoulder.
He didn't actually take the gloves off until he was back up at the counter and ready to hand them over. Just in case.
"Thanks." Xander pocketed the card and glanced back towards the door to Special Collections. "This library has a strange sense of humor. Which is to say yes, I think so."
Xander tilted his head. "Are you not gonna be a library aide next year? That'll be...okay, that would be weird if I were gonna be here to be weirded out by it."
"My contract expires, so I am outta here. We actually need to start letting people apply to be aides soon," she mused. "That is, if Mr. Wagner wants new ones. I don't know."
