Library, Thursday 12/15

Something odd was happening on the island, that much had been made clear when some people weren't quite themselves yesterday and when other people had simply appeared today causing trouble.

One person had notably disappeared (at least it was notable to Belle that Five couldn't be found) but she was trying not to worry about that at the moment. He could certainly take care of himself.

At least it wasn't snowing in the library like it was outdoors and the library had helpfully provided plenty of extra chairs and tables to research at in case anyone happened to come in for that purpose today.

Aloy had been– well, Aloy had been locked up in her homebrew lab, as she usually was, poking and prodding at machines.

And then she’d gotten bodied by Gerard, of all people. Gerard, who was supposed to be dead. She muttered a greeting to Belle on her way in, and immediately ducked into the stacks in search of an explanation for the readings she’d been getting.

(Had gotten, after she’d kicked his ass all over again.)

For the evening!

She's still here to help but she might like some food. Or a cup of tea.

At some point Belle had begun to look for records of anything like this happening in the past. The library was helpfully providing some Fandom history and even some history specific to the school.

Dean Skywalker had had interesting hair when he was a student here according to the one yearbook that had jumped off the shelf at her. Unfortunately that seemed to be the only thing of note in that particular volume.

Belle sighed, shaking her head a little, and reached for another book.

Hey, Tony could find some eveningwear! It'd cause him to fall behind on the whole 'figuring out why the hell MODOC was wearing pink and also here thing.

But he could.

"Should have known this time of year does this," he muttered to himself.

Aloy was still there by afternoon. She was wearing the same furs-and-robot-parts ensemble she had been wearing coming in.

She was rifling through books and muttering about the inefficiency to herself.

There was the tiniest, faintest hint of a smile on Beta's face. (No eveningwear for her, either, unless you counted how her usual outfits tended to look kind of like sleepwear.)

"It's so slow, isn't it?"

"It's not even advanced enough yet to connect with my Focus," Aloy sighed, looking up from a large, dusty book with clear frustration in her eyes.

"I know. There's no way to run even the most basic searches. And turning the pages is... not a pleasant sensation," admitted Beta, who sounded about as frustrated as Aloy looked.

Aloy shook her head. "It's a miracle anyone ever got anything done," she said.

"Have you found anything of use?" Belle asked. "The library has been giving me yearbooks, of all things, but I can't see how they could be relevant."

"The library has given you specific books?"

Aloy looked up.

She doubted that, somehow.

"It can be helpful on occasion," Belle confirmed. "Though not particularly so as of yet today."

"I work in here. It's used to me by now I should think."

"It's a pile of books with no overarching artificial intelligence," Aloy said. It sounded more like frustration than anything else. "But right... yearbooks. Books of years?"

"Books of students who graduated in a year," Belle said. "With photographs from the school year. I'll just bring some over to show you."

Because the library kept shoving them at her. You'd think it could just give someone in here whatever book would be the most helpful.

Aloy sat up. "Is there one for 1995?" she asked.

Because had that one felt like a useless rabbit hole.

"1995," Belle said. "There may , I haven't looked yet today. I'll check."

She came back holding a whole stack of yearbooks from the 1990s. "Why 1995?" she asked as set the pile down.

"I met an old enemy of mine," Aloy said, holding out a hand for one of the books. "He looked exactly as I remember. Except he had this small chain on him that didn't look anything like his usual... well... fashion sense, I guess. So I looked it up. A vintage 1995 Barbie keychain."

Belle handed over the yearbook from the top of the pile and started flipping through the next one.

"There's a note," she said, pointing. "And this is..." She flipped back to the cover and nodded. "It is 1995. That seems rather unlikely as a coincidence. Especially on this island. Here, see? It says there was an invasion! By 'some guy who threw evil toys at us and his buddy'? I haven't seen any evil toys. Have you seen evil toys? And, oh, that's good. It seems to have been'resolved without casualties, he just went away after we set them all on fire.' I assume they mean the toys were set on fire. I hope that's what this means!"

"Fire can fix a lot of things," Aloy said. She reached up to touch her Focus, realized it wouldn't do any good, and rubbed at her temple instead. "Well, it sounds like the exact kind of stupid coincidence this island loves," she says. "Anything else? Something actually useful?"

"This part might be," Belle said, pointing to a second note on the page in a different handwriting.

Hey, so I know this like, went fine this time? But the weird guy's buddy was like, super-weird. I got trapped in this closet in 203 and heard him ranting the whole time. So don't have any idea what he was talking about, but I figure we should like, reference this? For future us's sake, or something? I don't know, that sounds smart...

Here's what I remember:

"Now, remember, we've got to go back quite a bit to wake up ol' Slothy and wind him up,
Take a pit stop in a galaxy far, far away, a long, long time ago to give a couple of old nerf herders a change of heart,
Turn mr. Bullet into a speedster, more fun lobbing him at things later,
And, hm-- pass a cracker on to a mad wizard, shall we?"

"That seems like something, doesn't it? Perhaps someone else here could make sense of it?"

"It sounds like gibberish," Aloy said, but she looked thoughtful. "'Change of heart'... wasn't radio talking about how people were acting differently, yesterday? That's what made me realize this attack probably wasn't a one-time thing."

She sucked in a breath. "Guess we should check that, talk to some people, yeah."

"There were people acting differently," Belle agreed. "I'll see if I can't find anything else in here and perhaps ask some of the others."

Connor had been working on a number of projects and knew a bit about how fluid and also fragile timelines and all could be. But after a ~~still very sp in progress~~ encounter with one, Helen Cutter, Connor was pretty certain something was amiss- even by the island standards. And so after scouring the Museum, in a throwback outfit he still had laying around, for anything that might help, he had headed over to the library to do some research and digging there as well.

Oh, sure, Amaya was definitely in eveningwear! In that it was evening, and she was wearing it. Ha!

Amaya had also, at some point, had a very shaken Graham hurrying into her shop at some point, looking for weapons to defend himself from someone he claimed wanting to seek revenge on him for turning someone into a ca-- into a something. Even after she got him calmed down, he wasn't making a whole lot of sense, but it was enough that she promised go help and look into it.

....it was that time of year, after all, and as she found her way to the library, it didn't take her long go feel like maybe she was on to something, after all.

"Ahh, zards," she sighed, shaking her head, "what do we suppose it is this time?"
