Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, June 8, 2022

There was a definite smell of grease in the air along the beach that should worry anyone who'd every experienced one of Anakin's Wednesdays before, and that was only if they didn't notice the enormous, greased-up pole resting between two wooden scaffolds about ten feet above the water.

Or the greased-up pigs in a pen.

Or the greased-up flag pole.

Anakin liked a theme, that's what we're saying here.

"Today is all about adaptation!" Anakin yelled into the bullhorn when everyone had arrived. "Your teams have to attempt--individually--get get across the pole in the water and then up the flag pole. Your times, should anyone complete these tasks--will be added together, along with your efforts in the pairs greased pig collecting competition. Fastest team wins."

Who took Anakin to a county fair. Really.

"Listen for your names! There will be five teams of six and you may not use any special powers to assist yourself or your teammates. This is all physical prowess and mental stamina."

Stark wishing for an icon where he was all wet gratefully accepted that hand as he pulled himself up.

"Thank you," he said, flashing a smile at Travis. "I think it was less slippery for me? I don't know. You did fine."

"Yeah I really didn't," Travis said cheerfully. "But at least most people aren't doing that much better!"

"No, they aren't. But you didn't fall immediately, at least?"

And Travis was going to prove much better at climbing poles than Stark soon enough.

Well. He had a lot more pole experience than Stark did.

"I managed a whole, like, two steps, yeah."

Stark had enthusiasm to make up for his more limited pole experience!

"You didn't get hurt?" Stark tried. "Just wet." Which hadn't caused any staring! "Now we both are."

That's what happened when you fell off a slippery pole.

Travis's eyes trailed down Stark's chest a little.

". . . Yup," he said after a moment. "We're both definitely wet."

Maybe more pole practice was needed. After all the respectful looking was over with.

Stark let his own gaze drift lower, just for a moment, then nodded. "We are. Maybe I should have taken the mask off."

Now he just had wet leather straps to deal with.

"Maybe," Travis agreed, tilting his head. "It doesn't rust, does it?"

"It hasn't yet," Stark said. "It's just the leather isn't so comfortable when damp. I ought to dry it off, at least, when this is all over with."

"Oof, yeah, wet leather." Travis grimaced. ". . . You want to borrow my shirt again? The, uh, dry one I changed out of?"

Wet leather straps were better than wet leather pants at least? Those were really not meant to be submerged.

"Oh, no, I have one," Stark said quickly. "I mean, I have a dry shirt...although I have the one of yours still too."

"You mentioned that," Travis said smiling. "I, uh, don't need it back any time soon. If you want to hang onto it."

"Oh." Stark blinked a few times, then smiled back. "I don't need it. But thank you. I could...bring it to you? If you wanted."
