There was a definite smell of grease in the air along the beach that should worry anyone who'd every experienced one of Anakin's Wednesdays before, and that was only if they didn't notice the enormous, greased-up pole resting between two wooden scaffolds about ten feet above the water.

Or the greased-up pigs in a pen.

Or the greased-up flag pole.

Anakin liked a theme, that's what we're saying here.

"Today is all about adaptation!" Anakin yelled into the bullhorn when everyone had arrived. "Your teams have to attempt--individually--get get across the pole in the water and then up the flag pole. Your times, should anyone complete these tasks--will be added together, along with your efforts in the pairs greased pig collecting competition. Fastest team wins."

Who took Anakin to a county fair. Really.

"Listen for your names! There will be five teams of six and you may not use any special powers to assist yourself or your teammates. This is all physical prowess and mental stamina."

"I can't help it if they're too small," Vi protested with a grin.

"Nobody thinks to account for your badass biceps," Steph said dryly. "So tragic, really."

Again, not disapproving.

"It's the worst," Vi agreed with a very tragic flex.

"Yeah, but did you actually flex the sleeves off?" Steph wanted to know.

Look, it was important.

"What if I did?" She hadn't.

"If you did and I missed it, I'm gonna be disappointed," Steph told her.

She'd totally seen her tearing the sleeves off.

"Oh, well, I'd hate to disappoint you." That much was true, even if delivered in a joking tone.

"So you're saying you didn't actually flex the sleeves off." Steph smirked at her. "See? Told you it's good to have goals. And I want to be there to see it when you do."

Vi rolled her eye good naturedly. "I'll practice just for you."

"You win all the best friend prizes," Steph informed her cheerfully. "So many prizes."

"Are these prizes terrible shirts with too small sleeves?" Suspicous? Vi? Never.

Steph looked absolutely scandalized. "Ouch, dude. I would never give you terrible shirts."

Note that she had said nothing at all about their sleeve size though.

"Besides, at least some of the prizes were gonna be hugs."

Vi had in fact noticed that.

"Oh, if they're hugs, I guess that's okay then." Like she didn't take every excuse going to hug Steph.

"You guess it's okay?"

That was a wounded look on Steph's face there, Vi. So wounded.

If by 'wounded' you meant 'smug.'

Oh, no, not a ~~smug~~ wounded face. "Look, I'm sure they're great hugs. Really."

"Only the best, obviously," Steph retorted, spreading her hands and laughing. "Which you, as the resident expert, would know."

"Hmmm, I should probably check," Vi said thoughtfully, gearing up to tackle Steph.

It was probably a good thing they were having this conversation now instead of later in the day.

Yeah, not even the grossness of being covered in grease would be enough of a deterrent if this conversation happened later in the day.

"Couldn't just take my word for it," Steph said, shaking her head ever so sadly as she braced for being tackled.

"Nope," Vi said, grinning and flinging herself at Steph.

Steph made a good-natured oof noise when Vi tackled her, but was perfectly happy to hug her back. Imagine that.

"I guess that's fair." Such a magnanimous concession on her part. "Have to make extra sure and all that shit, right?"

Yes. It was all for science.

More science should involve hugs, really.

"Yeah," Vi agreed. "Pretty confident this is a great hug, though."

"I'm hugging you," Steph replied, "so I'd say that yeah, it is."

All the necessary components right there!

"Guess my great hugging's rubbed off on you." Not dirty.

Steph laughed. "You do actually give the best hugs I've probably ever gotten."

"Yeah, well..." You were getting hugged extra hard for that, Steph.
