Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, May 18, 2022

"Welcome back to another week of team-building!" Anakin yelled through his megaphone. "Today you will be in four teams of seven and you will be fishing with your toes for valuable prizes!"

They weren't that valuable, folks.

He gestured at the four inflatable pools located around the park with folding chairs circling them. "Working together, you have to pull 21 smallish objects from the water--" and be grateful that it's just water, "--using only your toes. And no powers. The fastest team to accomplish this wins. Listen for your name, come get your shirt and take off your shoes!"

"This shirt is even cooler than last time!" He was gonna wear it everywhere.

"They're pretty sweet, huh?" Steve said, grinning back. His had fishing lures on it!

"It's so awesome." Buck had wasted no time in getting his on and he thought he looked awesome. "I don't know what people are groaning about, last week's shirt was awesome too."

"People just don't appreciate the aesthetic of a really great aloha shirt, I guess," Steve said. "It's sad."

"People have bad taste." No, the two of you had bad taste.

This dude's entire wardrobe would be made entirely of shirts he had gotten through t-shirt cannons if he didn't have a sister, girlfriends and Eddie to stop him.

And Steve's came in four packs from the base exchange. They were wardrobe soulmates!

"Plus it's free!" Steve said. "Who doesn't like free stuff?"

"Exactly!" This is what he had been trying to tell people! "We should be thanking the guy with the mullet."

Oh yeah, that's definitely what Anakin liked to be called.

"We definitely should at the end of the summer," Steve agreed. "Fruit basket?"

"That'd be nice," Buck said. "And the quality of fruit basket depends on if he can keep the awesome shirts coming."

You'd be getting a shitty edible arrangement if you didn't keep up with the cool shirts, Skywalker!

Nothing but honeydew, the "fuck you" of the fruit world!

"That's very nice of us," Steve decided, nodding.

"It is," Buck agreed. "Least we can do. The guy must have a huge t-shirt budget."

"Isn't he kind of in charge?" Steve said. "Do you think he's embezzling to add to his t-shirt budget?"

No, Steve. That's not a thing.

"Embezzling from what?" Buck asked.

"At least yours isn't covered in fish with their mouths all gaping open," Will griped as he finished pulling his own monstrosity on.

"I think you're making it work," Buck assured him. "And free clothes, man. That's never a bad thing."

You would be thankful for those hideous shirts next time the laundry goes on strike.

"At least this one doesn't clash with my hair," Will had to acknowledge. "That's impressive given the range of colors on most of these."

"Yeah my one last week was very...loud." Sure, that was a word for it. "But it had cats and tacos on it, so automatically a keeper."

“Mine was a sloth riding a llama,” Will informed him. “There also might have been pizza involved somehow?” That shirt had had a lot of very disparate elements all stuck together. Unlike this one, which at least had a theme, even if that theme was ‘ugly-ass fish’.

"Also cool," he said. "I'm not appreciating all of the aquatic stuff I'm being made to do though. Last week swimming in cold-ass water."

You go through one tsunami and suddenly you're not into hanging out in the water. Weird.

“Not a water fan?” Will wondered. He could take or leave swimming, but then, he didn’t have tsunami trauma, so.

"I don't think it's a fan of me," Buck said. "We got hit by a tsunami a few years ago. It was brutal."

Kind of cool in hindsight, not so cool at the time.

And knowing Buck, Will was guessing he would’ve been on the front lines.

“Ouch, yeah,” Will winced. “That’d do it.”

He hadn't been a firefighter but he had been on the pier. Which was worse.

"Unlikely to happen here," Buck said. "Especially with inflatable pools."

A tsunami hitting the island was a possibility (was it? Seismology wasn’t really Will’s thing), but like he was gonna point that out.

“Yeah. Today seems more about touching potentially gross stuff with your feet.” Which was a weird sentence to put out in the world but there it was.

"Or touching someone else's gross feet with your own." He was on a team with the Muppet, Will.
